I know most of here enjoy our Kinja overlords and Jalopposinik ridiculousness that we incur on a daily basis. As one of the many people whom got an email with a code to join Drive Tribe I filled out my information and such. I did a little browsing of the site, checked out the Tribes available and I know I want to make one, but IDK what I want to do. Drive Tribe probably will not takeover the mass of my social media intake. Between Facebook and you dorks (I say with only love) I usually have enough stuff to browse to the point I turn off my phone and go about doing something else. The only thing is I think Drive Tribe will kill Wheelwell. While clunky, hard to find stuff, and not particularly nice to look at, the site had a few perks like showing all the parts you put in your car and what others with the same cars did. I know there are a couple users here that also use Wheelwell, what are your thoughts on this?

I know some people complained about needing Facebook to create a Drive Tribe, but I don’t understand why. Most people have one. Makes sense for a quick login and verification of person. Wheelwell allowed you to no link them, but you could at the same time.

I guess what I am trying to get at it do you think Drive Tribe will become big enough to kill off other automotive social media sites?

I do think that it’ll become very popular, at least at first. There are things there that I like a lot, such as the possibility to join a tribe with like minded people to and see what they’re up to.
Of course, this comment would be worthless without shameless self promotion - I’ve already created a tribe for those who enjoy racing (at any level) and are willing to share their personal stories with others, or read what other members have been up to. Of course, this is just the beginning, so there’s very little content at the moment, but that will, hopefully, change soon,

In a word, no. I think DT bears a closer resemblance to Kinja than Wheelwell, actually.

I’ve joined. I think it’s pretty cool. I’ve even created a BRZ/FR-S/86 tribe , since I searched but didn’t find one that already existed. I’ve posted a bunch of stuff there, and reposted my latest Right Foot Down article over there. It’s lacking. My biggest gripe is you can’t add links. At. All. Our “beloved” Kinja just let me embed links to two outside sites, but you can’t link to anything on DT. I’m huge on linking to other articles related to what I’m writing about, whether I wrote them or someone else did. Even if I’m completely disagreeing with someone, I’ll link to their article so people can read their point of view for themselves without my bias. I can understand DT not wanting to turn into a link spam fest, but not allowing any links at all is a huge mistake, I think.

My other big gripe is there is no formatting. No headers, no bold,   italics, strikeout , lists, or anything. And that’s even after unlocking the “Studio” feature that lets you post articles. Why should you be required to create a tribe of your own to gain access to this? DT will get too saturated with too many tribes quite quickly this way.

DT is cool for what it is, but it won’t replace Kinja unless Kinja gets shut down.

Well I will join your Tribe.

I also think it will become very popular, but I wonder how popular.

Interesting insite.

You aren’t required to make a Tribe though. You can just join others.

Absolutely true. But that’s the only way to unlock the Studio, which is the only way you can do more than post pictures or comments.

Thanks!
What I’m afraid of is if too many people rush to try it on the 28th and don’t give the platform a chance to grow organically. Lots of tribes will grow popular, but even more will quickly be forgotten. Hopefully everyone will be able to find some tribes with content that they enjoy, instead of leaving for good after the first few minutes

I know some people complained about needing Facebook to create a Drive Tribe, but I don’t understand why. Most people have one.

I thought so too, but I’m getting a healthy amount of stars and other input for this comment . I guess I’m not the only one who doesn’t Facebook.

Hmm... Yeah I guess if you don’t have a Facebook. I just don’t see why not have one. You don’t have to use it or the app. Just set it up to join Drive Tribe and ignore the fact you have a FB account.

Same. But since I’ve been on forums, i know how inept people are at using a search function....

FB’s terms of service demand a real name, and the only time I use my real name online is when I’m doing something important like taxes. The less of my identity on the web, the better.

Yeah, I’m not hugely fond of having my real identity associated with any open(ish) online activities. With car related things, I want to be a separate person and be able to be a car enthusiast without family interference. I also don’t need my opinions on things to interfere unnecessarily with my job, etc. (I’m not stupid enough to complain about coworkers on facebook, but being employed by a school system part-time severely limits my public behavior under my real name - opinions on beer? Not allowed. Occasional swearing? Also not ok. Etc., etc.) My facebook is as squeaky clean as I can get but I’m safe here to be a little more myself simply because it would take a few extra steps to identify me.

Thanks. I know it’s a little harsh, but I consider Facebook to be a slippery slope, and avoiding FB is a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

The problem with facebook, is that it takes control over everything you’ve got, and will crosslink any account, anywhere, even if you do everything you can to stop it.

I specifically wanted to keep my instagram separately from my facebook, so i used a different email, and set everything to private. Not allowing any app interaction, or sources in the options list. I never log onto anything with facebook either.

Despite all this, facebook friends are recommended my instagram... And facebook have now also figured out my other email addresses, including my google account. Just because i had the instagram and facebook apps on the same telephone.

It’s worth mentioning that Spotify somehow also has found my facebook account, and taken my profile picture from that, despite the two being on, again, different email addresses with everything set to private. It’s also no problem for my facebook friends to see what i’m listening to.

This is just what’s obvious. Just think about all the other things it does? For theese reasons alone, I’m tempted to delete facebook. I just want the option to have some things private, but that’s not an option anymore, thanks to facebook.

So yeah. Thats probably why so many doesn’t want to log in using facebook.

Hmm I never knew FB was so intrusive, but then I haven’t really thought twice about them linking together. No of that is really malicious to me. But I have been thinking more and more about downgrading my internet presence. Even getting a dumb phone because I am getting tired of being connected all the time.

That is one reason I am glad I switched to Android so I can edit permissions and such. Stupid iPhones.

I can appreciate that. I am lucky to be in the automotive world and regularly curse at work. Though I do have my FB set as private as I can because of my preference in partners and I prefer that to not mix with work. It is just easier.

That’s the big surprise here. Android does not help. It happened when i swapped from iPhone to Android! Probably because i never had the Facebook app installed on my iPhone. It sort of makes sense, because Facebook owns Instagram, so they should be able to put two and two together, as I am logged onto both accounts on the same device. But how Spotify enters the picture, I can’t figure out. But yes, it really is surprisingly intrusive, as I’ve just learned. And, so I’ve gained a few unwanted followers, that it would be rather rude to block...

Eh, I block lots of a-holes.

Really? Odd because android allows you to go in and play with lots of the permissions. Not all of them, but a fair amount. even more if you root you phone and really start messing with it.

Yep, with no accounts linked, no apps allowed, all permissions turned off. Still happened as soon as had both accounts running on android. Not tried rooting the phone, as i’ve only had andriod for a couple of weeks now.

Not a-holes following me, unfortunately. They’d allready be blocked if that was the case! Family etc, with no real interest in cars etc, that now follow my cars only insta, and have no concept of my sense of humor. It annoys me when i have to explain things.

Ah ok I understand, I block family if I have to. Sometimes it isn’t worth the butt hurt of them not understanding.

Realy?! Huh, never had a problem with them crossing with different emails and permissions off.

I had a FB account for a few months back in 2011. I killed it because social media just isn’t really for me. I started an instagram account in September of this year for me to kind of keep track of the road trip we went on. I’ve used it since we finished our trip, but not every day. I can’t stand facebook though. I found it to be a waste of time, and full of people that I wouldn’t normally talk to like former coworkers, people from high school and college. That kind of thing. I realized that I had no use for most of them, and I talked to the few I actually liked. I guess I won’t be able to join DT, but I’ll get over it.
