With all this NVH engineering, refinement, and innovation going on, why do I still hear so much starter noise before the engine turns over? I swear, I can recognize the starting of any modern Chrysler product from 4 blocks away before the engine blurbs to life.

After living with our Flex for six years, I can recognize the sound of a Duratec starter pretty much anywhere.

I’m like this with Subaru starters, at least since we got my wife’s Impreza back in April. I’ve been driving BMWs for a few years now and yet their starters never stand out to me when I hear other ones starting up in parking lots.

I had an ‘84 Jaguar XJ12 and the starter on it was probably the best sounding starter I’ve ever heard. Sounded like a sewing machine.

Really? I’ve always found the sound of a BMW turning over to be pretty distinctive, especially the 6 cylinder petrol ones.

Well now that you mention it, my neighbor’s older N54 335xi does sound familiar when he starts it up. I guess it’s just most of the I6 BMWs around me are the tame ones with quiet exhausts and the starters don’t generally make much noise, it’s more the exhaust noise that’s distinctive.
