My stepdad is basically “that guy” from Craigslist.

He likes to say things like:

The AC is good, just needs a recharge.

It just needs ____ and it’s like $20.

And most recently regarding my truck’s brakes he said it just needs a new brake booster vacuum line. That is true. But I was looking at it in the sun yesterday and noticed it’s got a slight leak between the master cylinder and booster. Fortunately, I can get both replaced for less than $100.

Quick background on my truck: I’ve had it since before I could drive legally. It’s spent the past few years at my parents’ because I couldn’t park it where I lived and it needed some work done. Recently the fuel tank, pick up, hoses, and pump were replaced so now it can stay running and not leak gas. Drove it down to my new home with questionable brakes. They worked but spongey and didn’t really kick in until the bottom of the pedal.

1. Fuel system so it doesn’t catch fire: check

2. Brake system so it can safely and reliably stop: not check

3. Various rubber things under the hood to be replaced before failure: not check

4. Tackle the rust before it becomes terminal: not check

What’s his opinion on lowballers? Does he know what he has?
