What Would You Think of a 400 hp, AWD Malibu?

Still think GM should toss the Opel Logo on US-spec Volts and any other electric cars they bring out.

Ok, well not a Malibu. A Buick...err Opel/Vauxhall/Holden, but a Buick in the US. What if it had a wagon variant? Im asking because the field seems pretty set for the next Buick Regal to have an AWD, twin-turbo V6 variant. I’m just speculating here, though.

GM always responds to any move Ford makes. Well, Ford made a big move with the 2.7L V6 Fusion Sport making 325hp/380 lb-ft and the 400hp/400 lb-ft producing 3.0L V6 Lincoln MKZ. Both feature AWD and have about a $12,000 starting price gap. Perfect space for the Regal since Buick sits right inbetween Ford and Lincoln.

The current Regal GS AWD starts at $36,540 but a 256 hp, 2.0L doesn’t cut it anymore as a top sport trim inside a 2-ton sedan. However the Epsilon II platform dropped about 300 lbs off the car, and nearly half of that weight loss is in the actual structure itself. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next AWD Regal weighs in at 3,800 lbs (again, inbetween a Fusion Sport and MKZ 3.0).

I just figure, if GM can offer a 410hp/369 lb-ft XTS V-Sport then why not offer something interesting too! Plus Australia seems to be throwing a fit over the Commodore name being used on the incoming Opel Insignia-based midsized Holden. Maybe this would help that out.

The US needs a midsized wagon that starts below $40k. Making it a Buick Regal Wagon would allow for a GS/GSX model to be fully loaded at around $52k. Cheaper than a Continental, and still not touching E-Class Wagon money.

*Side note, I wish GM badges had a quick-swap setup. I would love to switch the badges out on the next Regal between Buick, Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden emblems everyday going to work. Tell people I own four wagons...mmmm, four wagons.

Judging from the 2016 Impala Limited I drove (rented), hp is moot in a huge comfy econobox barge. As long as power is adequate it’s fine. They’re not fun to drive with 150 hp and aren’t fun to drive with 500 hp. Mine had 300+ hp, and honestly I wouldn’t have noticed had it had 200 or 400 instead.

Having said that, the car I sampled is of an old design and a segment larger than what we’re discussing here.

Meh, the 2010 Opel Insignia OPC/ Vauxhall Insignia VXR had awd and a 2.8l V6 turbo engine so it seems that Ford followed GM this time. Too bad North America only got a watered down Regal with a 2.0.

Well the Malibu and Impala are in different size categories, so I’m not sure what your experience with a FWD last-gen Impala has to do with something based on the Malibu platform with AWD.

I’d love this, especially if I could get a wagon. I wish the current regal GS had an aftermarket because they’re pretty cheap and the ecotec has room for more power. A 330+hp manual regal would awesome.

The LaCrosse needs this 400+ hp treatment before the Regal does.

The current impala and Malibu share a platform. The ~300hp is surprisingly quick, but wholly forgettable. I imagine 400hp would be similar “”Damn that’s fast....well no reason to ever do that again”

I’d heavily consider one, comfortable high power sedans are always cool

Always, always, always. And the Impala can be spirited, paddle shifting on a windy road, keeping the revs up.

I can imagine the Drift mode 4 wheel clutch pack system needing to be installed within the Impala.

I think you’ll find that HSV has some significant aspirations for the Insignia based Commodore in both wagon and sedan forms so there’s no reason why the US can’t have something similar

Not fun with 500 hp? Listen to yourself man. More is always fun, far as hp is concerned anyways.

Sure. But I’ve driven cars with 50 HP that were far more fun than that 300 HP Impala. The Impala with 300 HP put me to sleep, and not because it could accelerate (it could). I bet it wouldn’t be very different with 500, as long as it’s still as detached and indirect as the one I drove.

I’ll give you that. You must admit it would be fun pulling up beside someone in what they think is a rental car and completely blowing their doors off.
