Apart from bad weather and being able to accelerate out of turns better, what’s the point performance wise?

you never have to worry about grip, sand, rain, snow. i want my WRX back.
i’m sure most cars will have some sort of wheel spin when turning out of a parking lot under hard acceleration, but not AWD. I think i chirped the tires once, and that was because I was on a sandy patch while pulling out.

good lord, but are the chain necessary? I’d hate to have to drag that around to cars and coffee.

AWD is definitely good when it’s coming from two separate big block drivetrains. I don’t think anyone would argue otherwise.

2wd is 2
4wd is 4, and 4 is bigger than 2.
awd is ALLLLL THE WHEELS!!! and all is bigger than 2 and bigger than 4 !!!

Launching? I guess with slower cars it doesnt make as much of a difference though...
But like you said, the biggest advantage is definitely tight corners where you can use it’s launching ability and snow/dirt. I wouldn’t turn down a car for being AWD, but if I could choose the same car between AWD and RWD (assuming I wouldn’t drive em in winter anyway), I’d still choose RWD.

Improved acceleration on loose surfaces. I’d prefer rear engine rear wheel drive or mid-engine rear wheel drive as an everyday car. One pair of wheels for accelerating. One pair of wheels for turning.

Ahh. I think I get it now. So you can power out of corners similar to a FWD, but without the power understeer.
Now convince me boxer engines aren’t a bitch to work on! lol

You can work more magic with traction control when you have AWD.

Understeer is more a function of suspension than having AWD. Ask anyone who has put a meaty rear sway bar on a WRX.

I’m in Wisconsin so I have awd for the foul weather capability. I’ve also tweaked my suspension to make my car more tail-happy.

Spark plugs are the only regular maintenance item that can be a pain depending on where the plugs are, but everything else it pretty much the same. I’ve done timing belts, serpentine belts, turbo swaps, exhaust swaps...etc on various boxer engines (FXT, WRX, Loyale, Corvair) and the only thing that was a real PIA were the spark plugs on the WRX. On the older Subie engines the plugs were near the top of the head, and a breeze to swap out.

It’s not, they’re mostly just tarted up front drive systems that kill fuel economy and add weight. They also require an engine to be higher up than nessesary raising the COG and hurting handling.

But I like our Subaru because I can drive it like I’m Finnish, then hand the keys over to my wife knowing she will never get stuck, skid, or have any trouble with any road conditions..

I like how OP put the oldest Lancer Evolution they could find. I see your logic. :P
I don’t know if I can convince you. 4WD is for trucks and it was thoght at the time that it could be used in motorsports (ie., ice racing, rally stages). The drivetrain is more complex and more expensive as a result.
Now OP has enough material for his thesis or book report (do a thesis, makes you look mad smart :P)
