Die-Trying asked about this, so here it is. The toy Raptor is “in the shop” again. This time I used two Home Depot paint buckets to put it in the air. Much improved over the sketchy folding table used last time. One of the solder joints I made last time broke. I got a better soldering iron and solder, did the job in the daytime, and didn’t burn myself this time. They seem much cleaner and solid now, so hopefully the next time I have it apart will be to upgrade instead of repair.

The solder joint I made when installing the new left motor didn’t last that long before breaking free.

All better! I redid all 4 joints. Properly this time by heating the wires and tabs and letting the solder flow in instead of just melting some solder over the two and calling it good. Lesson learned - don’t rush.

Helps to have the right tools. This Weller solder station was only like $40, but it’s still a lot better than the random no-name $5 one that I used before.

Haha well my daughter kept getting stuck today so now I’m seeing if I can somehow mount 2 more motors to make it 4wd

Time to reinforce that frame and get some more powerful electric motors. Myself I still want to find a broken one to put a weed eater engine in.

Going to 18 or 24V is pretty easy. The frame should be fine. The motors actually should be able to handle it fine. The gearboxes need to be upgraded though. I’d also love to stick a small gas engine in one, though that probably would need a welded angle iron box to not be a total death trap. I have an old 2.0 cubic inch 2-stroke chain saw that doesn’t really get used much..... hmm....

I’ve seen some online and they do indeed go with welded angle iron frames. Normally they are strong enough to hold adult men.
