I met the owner of Vortic watches and was amazed with his story - he left a great job to start making watches. What do they do - they use original, vintage, pocket watch mechanisms, refurbish them, and stick them in a 3D printed titanium cases. Everything is made in the USA.

He just came up with a tribute to the Cubs winning - a watch made with the mechanisms from the last time the Cubs won the series, with the strap made out of vintage baseball glove, and the part of the set is a pen made out of the seats from Wrigley Field from the 30's.

This set is pricey - a nice used car pricey. His other watches are a lot more reasonable for such a interesting concept - like this one

They are coming out with another series, even less expensive.

But, the coolest thing is that they can take your grandfathers pocket watch and make you a wrist watch! My late uncle left me an old Soviet railroad watch - a $40 eBay special - but it has sentimental value and I am thinking about coverting it.

What do you think of this concept?

That’s a cool concept. I have a watch fetish myself.

If I ever win the lottery, I’ll have a large garage, large shoe closet and a large watch drawer.

I might get one of these watches soon.

This is a neat concept, but I would be cautious with one of these watches. I don’t see any with shock protection for the balance wheels, which I would consider essential for a watch you plan to wear on your wrist out and about or to work. I would save one of these for special occasions only, and would not wear it if you plan on any sort of physical activities. I have an older C Fleury that was recased for a wrist watch, and the balance wheel pinion broke due to a lack of shock protection. Also, they are charging a lot for these movements, and a lot of them aren’t even fully jeweled. Very cool if you want a watch with history to it, though.

That’s pretty awesome. The only thing I like more than re-purposing “old” stuff is American ingenuity.

My only issue is that they’re quite large. 49mm is a whopper of a thing and not everybody has the wrist for it.

You’ve got to remember that most of these movements were meant to be worn in a vest pocket or some similar location, so the chance to break them wasn’t as big as something worn on your wrist. My Hamilton has taken a beating but keeps on ticking, in-part due to its shock protection.

He may not see it as an issue, as someone paying $1,500 for an antique on their wrist might not be taking it to their day job as an electrician or playing football with it on their wrist. Just food for thought.

THey do make them smaller. I know they have a 47 and maybe even smaller.

Yes! Awesome storage, few bucks worth of watches. Wasn’t crazy about the movie though

Really? Wow I kind of liked it. Very different. Plus Huracan.

It was just over the top for my taste. Like the watches and the car, the jokes were funny. Fight scenes were over the top, and the convenience of him learning everything just on time was just not doing it for me.
