These are screenshots from a YouTube video which is, let’s say, “controversial”. I’m not sure where it was shot, but it’s supposedly in Cold War era Russia. Can you positively identify the jeep?

Edit: Perhaps someone with more time than I have tonight can pore through this handy database I just found: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

At first glance, it appears to be a Jeep CJ-3B due to the tall grille and general size. However, there are some very troubling details.

There are eight grille slots instead of seven

The turn signals are mounted higher than normal

It has full running boards

There are angular rear wheel arches

The windshield is split into two panes

The wheelbase is a bit long

It appears to have half-doors

There appear to be stake sides on the bed

The 6x6 troop carrier in the background may lend some clues, but since it’s so blurry, let’s look at the jeeps. What could they be? While I can’t figure out anything that matches all aspects, here are some similar-looking vehicles.

GAZ 69... way off

M151A2... no. DKW Munga... no. Sachsenring P3... no. Beijing Jeep BJ-2020... no.

I’ve looked at a couple Soviet military vehicle pages, but don’t own or know of any good reference material. I think I’ve reached the end of my Googling skills without resorting to translating search terms into cyrillic.

If the video is a hoax, it would have been a lot of work to modify a pair of existing vehicles so extensively with no apparent goal. If they are indeed production vehicles, they had to come from somewhere. I’m perplexed.

Do you guys have any clue about these mysterious jeeps?

Definitely not Soviet, those GAZs would be the closest things aesthetically ever built there.

What’s the video about? I’m curious about what’s controversial about it. Unless it’s just the vehicles :(

Link to the video?

The Bantam designed “Jeep” has spawned a lot of imitators over the years. Licensed or not.

looking for ussr jeeps found this page. I think the Russians did a lot of refurbishing during and after the war.

Yeah, and it’s driving me nuts. It’s almost like someone converted a GAZ-67 to look like a Jeep CJ-3B, via telephone instructions.

Maybe that jeep is not from this earth... “Aliens”.

Just kidding. But the origin of the jeep is bugging me.

Ok, but the jeep in the OP has an eight slot grille, running boards, angular rear arches with flares, longer wheelbase, no visible spring shackles, etc. I want to believe... but it’s just not convincing. It’s so confusing, because of the extensive work necessary to make ANY of the above vehicles look like the jeeps in the OP.

I think it’s a GAZ 67/Jeep mashup.

Maybe they were filming something for the Man in the High Castle?

Or Aliens.

Or a leak in the “multiverse”? Huh? Eh?

Heh... heh. I’m gonna lean toward “glitch in the matrix” or “swamp gas” until a better explanation comes along.

That’s what I thought... but with a different grille stamping and longer wheelbase? It just doesn’t add up...

During WWII. Willys were given to Russia to help them mobilise against the Germans but were after the war supposed to of all been collected up and destroyed.

Looks like Russia kept a few and does what communist countries do best, copy them.
