H&R Race Springs on Bilstein Shocks? Or, something similar?

Shocks are blown on the del Sol. Was wondering if you boys and girls have any suggestions on suspension options. Looking for a shock and springs combo.

Thanks!

coilovers.

much easier to install and set ride height where you want. and most have dampening controll

I don’t have the time or patience to fiddle with coilovers. This is just install and go!

coilovers are easier to install... its all together already as one piece

Coilovers:

Shocks and springs

No need for spring compressors with coilovers. Also more clearance for wheels and tires and ability to adjust dampening by turning a knob for better ride

I guess I should have said price is a constraint that is being made in the decision. :(

Monotube shocks like Bilsteins have a stiff ride. H&R Race springs also have a stiff ride. Do you want to rattle your teeth out?

Tokico Blue’s and H&R sport springs. Never had any Bilsteins on my Hondas. I had some Koni’s but didn’t think they were worth the extra money.

I just put Bilsteins on my truck, I know it is not the same thing but I can say I am unhappy with them. They ride worst than the stock shocks that were shot.

Ok, point taken. What would you suggest then?

What are you trying to accomplish? Street car with improved handling, a bit of lowering, and still decent ride quality? Some sort of competitive driving? Do you want/need adjustable shocks?

Koni STR.T (a.k.a. orange) shocks are a good budget performance shock that gives a smoother ride than Bilstein. For less aggressive springs, H&R OE Sport are the least drop at about a half inch lower than stock. For your car, in order of increasing drop from there it’s Eibach Pro-Kit, H&R Sport, Tein S.Tech, B&G S2, Eibach Sportline, H&R Race.

Personally the most aggressive I would choose are those B&G S2s, they’re going to drop both ends of the car 1.75". Even with good shocks you’ll notice the firmer ride. I’d say the Pro-Kit, Sport or S.Tech are probably all in the sweet spot. The Eibach Sportline and H&R Race are just too much IMHO.

Here, let me give you some context.

The goal of this car is to commute 100 miles each day, on highway mostly. The car has new bushings, new tires, but the suspension is worn, and frankly I am exhausted driving the car. I am currently running on Tokiko Blues and I think Neuspeed springs. The vehicle has about 178k on it, and I do not know how old the suspension is.

I do love driving the vehicle. It has upgraded swaybars which I could probably sacrifice spring and shock ratings as the swaybars can pick up the slack.

TLDR

Need my del Sol to do a 100 mi commute, daily. Currently has upgraded swaybars (Type R Front and Back), new bushings (Energy Supension Master Kit), rolling on Pirelli P4s. Current set-up is Tokiko Blues on Neuspeed Springs.

What is the best set-up? Also, what are B&G2?

Del Sols have bad body stiffness, and Bilsteins are brutally stiff. Do not choose them.

If it’s for a long commute, I have had great experience with Eibach Pro-kit springs. Avoid Tokico shocks, they blow out immediately.

Do they make Koni yellows for your car?

Yes, they do have Koni Yellows. After some research, it looks like these are the way to go.

Koni Yellows and Eibach Pro-kit?

B&G is another spring company, less well known than Eibach or H&R. I have them on my 335xi. But for what you’re describing and how much the application for your car lowers it, they’re probably more aggressive than you want. I would do the Koni oranges and either H&R OE Sport or Eibach Pro-Kit springs. It should still handle good but the ride won’t be as punishing.

Sounds like a winner to me.

Any benefit to running the Koni Yellows?

They’re manually adjustable. Mostly that adjustment gives you the option to make them stiffer. The softest setting is pretty similar to the oranges. I’d bet the majority of folks with yellows leave them on full soft and never adjust them.

Agreed on that last part (Koni Yellow, full soft). Any concerns about build quality? I know that it is a Koni shock, but the price point is concerning. Is that even a thing?

I wouldn’t be worried about the lower price on them, they’re a simpler design compared to the Koni yellows or FSDs so they’re cheaper. I have FSDs on my car and they’re sorta kinda adaptive shocks that do it mechanically rather than through electro-wizardry, but they’re also not cheap.

Thank you. I appreciate your time, your opinions and your patience.

I think it might be the Koni Oranges on Eibach Pro-Kit springs. The sway bars can do their work. That way I still stay planted in the twisties.

Any thoughts on the Eibach Pro-System Kit?

I’m not super familiar with the Eibach shocks but I’d assume since Eibach says they’re matched to Pro-Kit springs that they’re probably not too aggressive and might suit your needs.
