Any Oppos dreading Thanksgiving? I am.
I hate 2 of my wife’s 3 sisters, one of whom has a husband who is not a bad guy, but who is a useless tool. I love my wife, and have to suppress my natural confrontational instincts, but it is painful. I will be seeing them at Thanksgiving and will survive by numbing my brain with booze.
I hope all of you have a better Thanksgiving ahead than I do.

Yeah. That sounds about right.
Just respond with “deez nutz” whenever they ask what you’re thankful for. If it doesn’t work the first time, say it again in a sleazier manner. That usually does the trick.

I am planning on doing nothing. Work is closed thanksgiving, but I have to work Friday and possibly Saturday, so i won’t be driving home. Maybe pizza by myself.

I don’t know how to respond without insulting someone, so I will just say I disagree vehemently with their politics and hope that it is not brought up.

I solved this problem by being Canadian and having Thanksgiving a month ago.

Yes, but by some small stroke of luck, we’re having a very small thanksgiving with my parents, wife, and kids. I don’t know how I dodged that bullet. It’s the mass family gathering the day after I’m dreading. At least for that gathering there’s a distant relation that’s a commercial cargo pilot. He’s a good one to strike up a conversation with.

Sounds like christmas in my family (we don’t have thanksgiving in the U.K. but ye’, I know the feeling).
Why do we do it to ourselves?

Visiting lots of trump voters (friends, family, etc.) , so yeah little bit of dread there. The amount of Fox cable news I’m exposed to every year really fucks with my qi.

My sister left her husband and two kids (4 and 5) a couple of months ago and she’ll be at Thanksgiving at my parent’s place with everyone else. Can’t. Fucking. Wait.

That sucks, good luck to you and your liver :( I don’t like holidays with my own family, but I solved that by moving 10+ hours away from them and marrying into a better one where I can eat food, watch football, and nap on the couch in peace. They even wear JEANS!

Reality has been proven to have a heavy liberal bias. Heaven forbid they experience anything outside their safe, and blatantly white bubble.

To be fair, non of them are belligerently racist, just seems that’s not a deal breaker for them in a national political candidate.

My brother in law is a... Rangers fan... shudder.
Kidding aside, hopefully you make it through unscathed. My wife’s sister in law’s sister is an absolute head case but I just sit back and chuckle. Everything seems to go wrong in her life and there is always some new drama to deal with. For some reason she can’t wrap her head around the fact it’s 100% because of her own actions.

I’m not dreading thanksgiving, but there is a lot of family turmoil going on at the moment that could easily come to a head at thanksgiving and thus ruin the day. I hope not.
One of my brothers in law on my wife’s side is a not a bad guy, but a useless tool too! So cheers on that!

On this note, the extreme bias and reality denialism exists on both sides of the aisle. I had a pretty unique perspective on the election as it unfolded. Grew up in rural PA, now living in Portland OR, so I saw what was going on in both echo chambers simultaneously. Frequently, liberals and conservatives both, pigheadedly refuse to see facts when they go against the accepted narrative.

I get to see my sister in law and her boyfriend at her place. They are super liberal. Her mother and stepfather are coming - they are very right wing, and after any alcohol we’ll probably hear about Obamas birth certificate. I am somewhere in the middle, but we can’t talk politics at all because my wife can’t stand when her mom gets into things she has no clue about but pretends to be an expert. To top it off, SIL is pregnant and I’m sure we’ll hear a lot about that as she is not planning on getting married any time soon.
I hope I’ll be able to talk guns with my Step-FIL and talk watches with my SILs boyfriend and avoid any drama. We shall see how successful I am.

No argument here. I am as guilty as anyone of wanting to believe certain things are true.
I will argue that my reality is far more based in facts and reason than the typical Cheetolini enthusiasts; of which I am vehemently not.
Yes, our government kinda sucks. Yes, you are right in being angry about being ignored. No, that does NOT allow you to be okay with the horrible things the person you voted for is going to do just because he was the first one to finally address your situation specifically.

The side of the family I’m going to this year has been nicknamed “guns and go karts Thanksgiving”. Last time I went I got yelled at for being antisocial until I went out and shot my uncle’s desert eagle.

Yep, my views also.
I just can’t tell you how many people I spoke with who were absolutely convinced the whole country was going to go blue/red this election due to the curated version of reality presented in social media. I knew the whole time it was going to be close, didn’t expect this result, but not wholly surprised by it either.
Actually pretty fascinating (and terrifying/depressing) to watch as it unfolded considering my background in social psychology.

Relatively tame, but I don’t really look forward to Thanksgiving much cause my aunt and uncle are cold and distant. Everything with them seems like a formality, even my Dad has this kind of relationship with them too.
And my cousins (their kids) are a lot older than me but only reach out to me if they need help with something (babysitting or fixing their car/computer/etc.). Every time I’ve asked them if they’re free they either don’t respond or give me “sorry we’re soooooooooo busy” etc.
What’s the point of everyone living 15 minutes away when you see each other less than 5 times a year?

A few years back a coworker invited me and my roommate to his parents’ house for Thanksgiving. We showed up and before we set foot in the house the coworker comes out and says, “By the way, my uncle just got out of prison and he’ll be having Thanksgiving with us.”
I asked him, “What was he in for?” He replied, “He’s a pedophile.”
Most uncomfortable Thanksgiving ever.

I usually remedy the situation by getting drunk and saying uncomfortable things at inopportune times.
Like when I made my wife’s dad drop food out of his mouth by telling him “Ima put a baby in your daughter.”

I’m stuck 1800 miles from family and I’m too cheap to buy a ticket to see them. Since I’m a relatively new employee, I probably couldn’t get the time off if I wanted it. I’m schedule to work, so I’ll be on the 1800-0300 graveyard shift, so keeping awake will be the big challenge even without the tryptophan (even though I know that this is a myth...)
