As car people we find people have strange ideas and opinions about cars.

My wife, for examples believes the rental 5 door Yaris was the best car she’s ever been in.

That NO ONE recognizes the X6 as a Crossover, they see it as a sedan the same size as a Honda Civic specifically.

Also, whatever your speedometer goes up to is how fast the car can go, period.

I met a girl at a party and was chatting with her for a while when it became evident that she was into cars...score...and she had a ‘67 I believe Dodge Dart 440...score indeed.

I then naturally shared that I drove a V12 S-Class with twin turbochargers that can do a standing quarter mile 1/10th faster than a Ferrari 575M. I was told then, in no uncertain terms, that her Dart was a quantifiably better car than mine in every way and that Mercedes-Benzes are driven exclusively by women. It had roughly the same impact as if I had told her I drove a beige ‘96 Corolla CE.

I excused myself for another drink and did not return.

Nobody is saying that they aren’t cool to look at, or tons of fun to drive and work on. Or that you can’t make them much faster for almost no money (sometimes even no money).

But a factory stock ‘69 Z, as sold by GM, was a 14 second car. Fuck outta here with your 12 second dreams.

Absolutely. I believe what she actually said was that the only people who buy Mercedes-Benzes are men for their unemployed trophy wives. And then heavily insinuated that I was nothing more than a showboating casual car enthusiast who bought a V12 to brag about it, and consequently not a very manly man because of it.

It was a very unpleasant interaction.

Sure.

(No SR20 on this one but I have no reason to lie.)I had a friend that had a 68 C20 “show truck” with a 6-71 blown 327. One show day this guy spouted off on how he knew the truck was all show. How? How did he know?? The dry rotted slicks? The 1970s paint job? Nope..

Modern cars are so much lighter than they used to be. True story I was in a lecture and it was on a study about vehicle safety I asked the 2 doctors presenting how increases in materials science and safety equipment offset the physics of more massive cars on the road and they both emphatically denied that modern cars (on the whole) are heavier than old cars.

People accept that it’s a brand as a whole before they will accept some just aren’t manufactured properly.

... or that the one example in their anecdote was poorly maintained, or not maintained at all.

The number of people who completely neglect their car, ignore every odd sound/smell/vibration, and drive it until it fails completely, and THEN complain the car is a piece of junk is staggering.

Yesterday I was in a pretty eye-rolly discussion in a Camaro group. Someone posted up a new ZL1 for sale listed at 64k. Some other guy started commenting about how he’d rather get a loaded SS and supercharge it to save a few grand. I pointed out how it still won’t be a ZL1 which would still happen to have a warranty. It then turned into a “I know someone who knows someone who’s got 650hp on the stock bottom end” blah blah blah. And then some random dude pops in and starts posting pictures of heavily modified 5th gen Camaros.

TLDR; Camaro owners have ADHD.
