...as I was rolling just off the highway into downtown in my E90 M3, and I see a very well-kept E39 M5 in Royal Red come up behind me and move up ahead to the right, a couple lanes over. He had his windows down, so I figured I’d give him a hello and thumbs up as a fellow enthusiast. As I roll my right window down and get up next to him, I realize it’s my old boss! I get his attention and say a quick hello and go on my way. I may have had my differences with him as a manager, but his taste in cars is irrefutable.

The first E39 M5 I drove was Royal Red, such a great color.

I didn’t even know they made the E39 M5 in that color! I thought it was black or more black.

Black, silver, Le Mans Blue, and even Imola Red are more common. Not sure if Royal was a standard choice, or an Individual color.

My ‘88 Acura Legend was a color close to this. Very classy indeed - suits the E39 very well.

I think it was an individual color like Oxford Green, they’re out there just in minuscule numbers. Hell even Alpine white is pretty rare; I desperately wanted an alpine white BMW when I graduated from college and an E39 M5 in alpine white seemed to be very uncommon.

Yeah, now that I think of it, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a white one.

I feel like with all the M cars crawling around north Fulton, I’ve seen one, but I can’t remember for sure. Saw an e90 in alpine white without a sun roof, I was like damn I want that.

Yup. I was honed in on Alpine White or SSII, in some part due to the big white reverse lights on the ‘08s. If I could’ve afforded an ‘09+ at the time, I would’ve opened it up to the blues.

When I was searching for mine I wanted an LCI with a 6MT, leather, and idrive with no more then 30k on the clock. I was less picky about the color, but I wasn’t going to buy one in red or black. I went after the LCI because of some of the things I didn’t like on the 2008. I had trouble finding an acceptable one, I almost decided to wait and get a new F80. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the space grey metallic when I got it, but it has really grown on me.

It’s a great color on the E90. It wasn’t on my list at the time because my wife’s car was pretty much that color. I forget, does your have the Fox Red interior, too? Dark gray exterior plus red interior is the sex.

They actually didn’t offer the space grey until after the facelift, you got sparking grey metallic instead.
I’ve got a nice boring black interior, which was immaculate when I got the car. Mine only had like 15.7k on it when I got it. I would have chosen a different color combo if I was able to, but I like the car so much it doesn’t matter to me.
Tried to buy this E90, almost the same as mine but without a sunroof and with the HK system. I wasn’t able to get financed :(

I agree, and despite the fact AW was the most common LCI color, I still couldn’t find one.
