Why did manufacturers decide that tail lights should stick out like swollen lumps?

Seriously, I saw one SUV where the tail light had a clear lens that bubbled over like a blister that served no purpose but to look like someone gave no fucks about following a body line.

Toyota loves this design. I wish they would stop with the Altezza/APC lights. Let’s all agree that fad died 10 years ago.

Because tail lights can be a styling element of their own. Red plastic doesn’t look like painted metal, so you’re not concealing the taillight by making it flush.

I think a lot of tail light stick out more now because of trying to improve aerodynamics. Not sure if a .00025 saving per mpg really matters that much though.

I agree.

I remember when all the kids would tint their red tail lights dark or other colors. Now I’ve gone and used the same type of tint (VHT Nite Shades) to make my tail lights red light they ought to be. (The turn signals still shine amber, not red, when they’re lit, which I like.)

I think it has to do with the aerodynamics around the transition to the rear of the car. My grandfather’s X5 has little fins which stick out of the side of the tail lights.

THANK YOU!!!!

Toyota is the worst offender, in my book. This whole light-bulge catastrophe began in the early 2000s with them and it remains as a prominent feature in their design language even today.

Fuck your bulbous puss-filled design language. And don’t you dare ruin the Supra with this bullshit!

Talking of hilarious Palladium things, I’m going to buy a copy of Nightbane. Siembieda decided he needed a Vampire-like Dark Monster PCs hiding in shadows sort of game, so the next step was 15 pages of random tables for generating PCs, which can include having a motorcycle as one’s lower body.

I am not making this up:

What’s mind-boggling is that it’s probably more playable than RIFTS because it doesn’t have a PC class split on who can do/resist megadamage and who can’t. Almost everything in Nightbane is SDC.

His masterpiece is the description of mega damage he did where a laser pistol gunfight makes a building collapse.

Also the Machine People RCC thathe could power energy weapons indefinitely and eat metal to add 200 MDC with no limit on how much can be eaten.

RIFTS: the game that knows there’s a fine line between stupid and clever, and has loopy enough rules to ensure that anyone playing is too autistic to know where said line actually is at any given moment.

So far, the times I’ve run it, the combat has been largely the MD types just on the rampage, with almost no point in keeping track of anything on the SD scale, and just sort of loosely managing enemy vehicles/etc. as “okay, this one can take about two hits”. Generally the way to carve out space for those people not capable of destroying city blocks is to rope in their technical/other skills. Because if you’re willing to threaten your players with actual risk of nuking them if they try to MD their way out of everything , sometimes they pay attention. Sort of.

Actually, I did have them re-opening a rift to somewhere that was devoid of animal life because of vampiric plant energy essence soaking evil, but then they had to run away from the site because the Coalition had it on their “Nuke This Shit Right Meow” list. So they had to get out to quasi-safe range - including the dragon but only sort of including the glitter boy.

Anyway, who would be such a fool as to buy Nightbane? Me. Mem, that’s whom.
