1. Usually when the paint comes off of beetles in those areas, there are horrible things happening underneath.
2. There are varmints in them thar interior
3. It has a flat tire. This either means it won’t hold it or the owner is super lazy. Both suck.
4. The rear of the car looks odd, the tailpipes don’t match the cutouts. No excuses for misaligned stuff on a Bug unless it’s bent.
5. HOLY SHIT IT’S AN AUTOSTICK BUY IT BUY IT

It’s not a rust bucket, it has a clean title, and it’s only $350. If that’s not fuck-it money, I don’t know what is.
Oh wait, you were looking for reasons NOT to buy it. Sorry not sorry. You should buy it.

The name
Autostick
has been used both for a Volkswagen semi-auto transmission

and a system designed by Chrysler which allows for manual selection of gears with an automatic transmission. Another similar system designed by Porsche is called Tiptronic.

Oh, my dude... gather round, children, let me spin you a yarn...
The Autostick is the single best way to break in newbie employees at a German car repair shop. Notice the car has a stick shift but two pedals? It’s a standard H-pattern manual box, with a clutch and everything, but... but but but! It also has a torque converter. What is this dark magic? The clutch is activated by a big vacuum servo on the side of the transmission, which itself is activated by a microswitch at the base of the shifter. If you so much as breathe on the shifter, it disengages the clutch. So if you start the car and select reverse to back out of the shop, but leave your hand on the shifter, anticipating a shift back to 1st, it won’t move. Hilarity ensues as new guy sits and revs the engine for 5 minutes, trying every gear, with everyone laughing at him. If you select a gear and let go, it’ll engage the clutch but sit and idle in that gear by virtue of the torque converter, until you give it throttle and it moves. To shift, lightly grab the shifter and move to the next gear, letting off the throttle briefly as you would with a manual. With practice, they shift very smoothly and quickly, they’re actually fun to drive like that. Porsche used this setup in the 911 too, but called their version the Sportomatic.

It’s a 3 speed manual with basically a torque converter on it. They call it a vacuum actuated clutch, which is actuated by slightly pressing down on the shifter, but it’s really more of a vacuum operated lock up converter. It’s probably broken anyway.

I think so, don’t know if that’s also a vacuum system though.

I would build one of these! and be 50% done since I would have only more one bug to buy.

Just did some looking and came across an old article talking about it. It was called Sensonic and apparently was computer and hydraulic ran, similar to the Porsche triptronic.

If it can move under its own power, for $350 there’s really no reason not to play with it for a little then kick it on down the road.
Plus, autostick!
