County Sheriff’s Deputy driving in the fog with no headlights, when back in June it became law that headlights must be on when visibility is reduced to 500ft or less.

I also watched someone in a C-Max driving with NO LIGHTS at 8pm last night roll right past a city cop and they didn’t do jack.

But then again no amount of cycling. flashing, or honking the whole time I was behind them got the message across.

People are just dumb.

Since it’s just getting dark when I leave work between 5-6 PM, now I see at least half a dozen cars driving around with no headlights on. The idiocy is astounding. A well-lit street makes people completely forget about using their headlights.

And I see cops do it ALLLLL the time, driving with no lights on when it’s way past the “30 minutes before sunset” law we have in our state.

Disagree.

I’m anti-DRL and anti-auto headlights. Not because I’m a luddite, but because I want to be reminded that getting into a metal cage and driving far faster than I can run, is a huge responsibility. And I want everyone else to understand that level of responsibility as well.

I’ve always wondered about that. Are they just trying to avoid a ticket because one of the headlights are out?

BTW, I once got a ticket for a nonworking headlight without the benefit of a warning. Fuck you West Windsor, NJ motherfuckers!

I once flashed my high beams at an oncoming car driving with no lights in the late dusk through rural Vermont (that might be redundant). Turns out it was a cop and I was shitting myself hoping he wouldnt pull me over. I didnt get pulled over but I was just left thinking, stupid cop driving without lights.

This is an absurd waste of the headlights. Sure they are relatively cheap, but full-on headlights are not all that useful in the middle of the day. During the summer, I rarely drive at night. Unless it is raining, I generally dont use my headlights at all for like June-July.

Seems like proliferation of automatic headlights is the number one culprit. Forcing someone to turn them on when they need them is a good habit. You only forget to turn them on if you are used to the car always doing it for you. Plus DRLs are often so bright and electronic gauges always lit (Hondas are a good example) that you wouldn’t definitely notice the lack of headlights.

I just don’t get why tail lights arent part of the DRL package.

Ugh this kinda thing is extremely annoying.

Here in California we are required to drive with our headlights on when it rains enough to warrant turning on the wipers... ALMOST NO ONE DOES IT, and at least half of the people that do, have auto headlights anyway...

I’m not sure, I think in most cases it’s just people who are completely oblivious to the fact that they forgot to turn on their lights. In all fairness, it’s hard to tell in a well lit city sometimes, but still.

There’s time’s I’m moving too, like pulling into or backing out of the spot, or not as relevant now, sneaking in or out at night. Some other reasons I can’t think of now, maybe pulling up to a camp site and not blinding your friends, drive-in movies, etc. The real problem is the gauges being backlit 24/7, so nobody knows if their headlights are on or off. Used to be if you can’t see your gauges, you turned your headlights on.

Another instance I just found 2 weeks ago, and had to put another example out there. A local town has a bunch of christmas light set up on the main drag, people come from all over to see them. There’s a sign at the begining telling you to turn your headlights off. Somebody behind me didn’t for a few minutes. I suppose you could be the jack ass blinding everybody in front of you just trying to look at Christmas lights, but I don’t want to be. I’ll concede that parking lights can be lit as they’d be what I use in those instances anyway, but I do not want my headlights lit every minute I’m in the car.
