Sure there isn’t any snow in the forecast and we have a couple of warm days coming up, but today was an immediate sign that I have to take off my summer wheels and throw on the winters. It was in the 40s this morning on the drive into work and raining pretty steadily. My summer tires were having trouble tracking a straight line, felt like bricks, and any puddles were just hydroplane-city. If driving relaxed in relatively straight lines at 50mph is feeling unsafe, I can’t even imagine what panic braking or evasive manuevers would result in. So at some point Friday/Saturday I will be throwing on my snow tires! Back to rocking steelies =)

Sounds about right. General rule of thumb is if overnight low is around 4 or below, winters go on. Around 4C/40F is where grip crosses between all-seasons and winters. I put mine on even though on occasion daytime high shot back to 20C.

Oh man 20C sounds terribly warm for the tires, I have run my racing slicks during autocross in that sort of weather. I have been delaying so long since I dont drive at night much and it has been unseasonably warm and dry. But yeah I am on summers and not all-seasons so it is even more important that I swap them off ASAP.

I’m in Wisconsin and it’s been taking longer than usual to get properly cold (which I am of course fine with) so I haven’t really had a similar experience with my summer tires yet. But I do like to get my snows on before Thanksgiving and that is fast approaching. So yeah, time to get mine ordered as well.

Well after the DST changes, essentially I’m only driving in the dark on weekdays...

Yeah thats why the morning is sketchy. I shifted my work schedule after DST so now I am out at 1600 while the sun is still around. I hate driving home in the dark.

I’m trying to hold off as long as possible, but looking at the extended forecast, we have 3 days of rain/snow mix coming at the beginning of December.

Last winter was very mild, so I didn’t put the snows on until 1/2/16. I put my summers back on 2/20/16 - a little early, because I had to put the snows back on 2/23 due to snow lol. Then I swapped the summers back on 2/27.

When I put my snows and steelies on, I drop my tune from the normal, fun tune, to the off-the-shelf stage 0 tune (enhanced stock) because the snow tires just can’t handle the power, and I want them to last a few winters lol.

Haha yeah I will never have a “too much power” problem. Winter is definitely colder here then. Other than Christmas day last year, most days december-march were sub 30 degrees. Plenty of ice to make me feel happy with my tires. Not much snow but I hit some driving up to ski mountains.

I am surprised its not colder there. But I dont really know anything about the weather in Wisconsin. There is a big red blob of states in the middle of the country and I just assume it’s all cold.

Snow tires and a Miata are good moves - I had an NC a few winters back, and running just all seasons sucked so much.

Generally speaking, our summers are very nice and lovely and don’t have many days of “man it’s hot today.” Our spring and fall are too short and our winter is too long. We get a decent amount of snow but it tends to be in frequent 3 to 6 inch chunks rather than giant snowstorms. We don’t see grass for a couple months since it doesn’t warm up enough for the snow to melt.

Of course, you made me check the weather just now and the 10 day forecast is calling for maybe getting some snow next Tuesday. Uh oh.

I feel like the definition of all seasons is that they “suck at all of the seasons”

I am excited for the first snow fall. Past few years it has been near Halloween. I will be impressed if I dont see snow until after Christmas.

I’ve gotta get my ABS/DSC working properly before the snow hits. I can drive without it but right now it’s working intermittently and the last thing I want is for, say, the skid control to deactivate right in the middle of being used.

Yeah that seems scary. I am glad to have neither of those. The limited slip diff is my only traction control device. But that is a lifesaver when it comes to getting unstuck. Have put trucks/suvs to shame in the winter with my Miata!

That’s how I feel too. For me, it’s summer and snows for my FiST, and any future car I get
