Now I have a Tacoma part wishlist.

Also, anybody got experience with these? Outside of stupid frame rot, I’d like to know more.

Better than the 3VZ. Also not a crazy powerful engine but get up in the revs and it’s ok.

Didja get one yet? Other than having friends here that have had them forever with no issues, I don’t have much else to offer. Here is Colorado, which is rather rust free, though. My roommate from many moons ago bought a ‘97, new to haul his bike in.

What’s the wishlist?

If I can find a clean manual, 4x4 one...

The wish list is an ARB bumper like the one pictured, meaty tires and a few other small things.

1st gens are tough, but a lot less civilized than gen 2. i.e. slow, bumpy, crude, etc.

On paper, they seem pretty quick but I haven actually driven one.

Any experience with the manual ones?

I think the 4runner is 8.3 but I’m not sure. it feels faster

My uncle’s has like 250k on it and the only major repair was the frame replacement, which was done under warranty. I’d say look for one that has already had the frame replaced by Toyota.

It was very reliable, except for that one time we had to replace the entire frame...

It’s a good gearbox, and it helps but let’s just say the trd supercharger was a popular add on

I had a manual, 4x4, V6 97 it was plenty powerful. Probably quicker than your average 1/2 ton V8 of the time.

To be fair, it was a recall, and it was free. If there wasn’t a recall on them, they would be pretty much worthless, instead of $10k for a truck with 250k on it.

That’s true. I’d imagine there’s still a good market for them.

Those are very pricey.. I wanted one for my 4Runner but $950 bucks.. Just can’t justify that for a bumper I know I don’t actually need.

I had a v6 TRD 4x4 manual ‘03, same color. Wish I still had it. The 3.4 is pretty good, but will need the heads done eventually. They don’t have much torque down low, but they get the job done if you rev them a bit. They don’t ride very well on those Bilsteins. I never liked the seats, and I sometimes wished I’d gotten a 2.7 for simplicity and ease of maintenance. Not a lot to go wrong, in any case.

I’d probably use it, but yeah they are expensive. Not too many options out there though.

Nice, thanks for the info.

How was the steering feel and tramission?

Kinja'd!!! jasmits > jkm7680

Kinja'd!!!0

There are cheaper ways to mount a winch and lights. Seeing as I don’t live in Australia where a kangaroo is likely to jump across the road the protection provided by a high quality bull bar is wasted on me

Kinja'd!!! RallyWrench > jkm7680
11/15/2016 at 11:53

Steering actually wasn’t bad, it was kind of fun to throw around. The trans is trucky, pretty agricultural in feel, but strong.

I feel the same way about fancy new bumpers. So I’ve promised myself: I won’t buy an after market bumper until I ruin the one on the truck, because then I’ve proven to myself I need one.

Kinja'd!!! jasmits > DynamicWeight

Kinja'd!!!0

For me it’s maybe that or more likely buy a truck that’s already got one. Seeing as I’m not planning on getting a new truck in the near future and even if I was I probably wouldn’t find one, it looks like no bumper for me. TBH even if I ruined my stock one I’m still not sure I could swallow $950 to protect a $3000 vehicle. And enough early 90s Toyota 4Runners and pickups are around I’m sure I could find a new one

Kinja'd!!! RallyWrench > jkm7680
11/15/2016 at 16:11

Kinja'd!!!1

Not bad, really. That’s one thing the Bilsteins helped. Like I said, it was fun to throw around, even though it was a 4x4 on All Terrains. A bigger front swaybar would be great, but that limits articulation, and I used the thing offroad whenever I could. You can only do so much against a high center of gravity or without sacrificing off road performance. The 2wd trucks can be a lot of fun, I also used to have a 22RE ‘93 that I cornered on the doorhandles, it was a riot.

That’s good to hear, I’d be driving a lot of twisties and putting a decent amount of highway miles on it.

What were your biggest complaints about it?

Kinja'd!!! RallyWrench > jkm7680
11/15/2016 at 18:31

Kinja'd!!!1

Mostly the ride and the narrow interior. It always felt like I was rubbing elbows with the passenger. The fuel mileage was never great, I think the best I ever saw was about 22, taking it really easy intentionally, but most of the time it was sub-20. It was a great truck though, as well as they hold their value I wish I still had it.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a vehicle that holds its value so well, but never goes up in value haha.

Yeah! I stupidly traded it on a bugeye WRX wagon that I later rolled. I did some stupid shit in the truck, but nothing like that goddamn Subaru. I’d have been much better off with the truck.
