So a buddy of mine is thinking about getting a higher mileage s60R for a winter car so he can finally garage his E36 M3. Anyone have any experiences with these cars? Especially when the miles start getting past 100k? These are selling for suspiciously cheap and seem like a nice sporty AWD sedan to put a few thousand miles on during the winter.

They’re really good on paper but that’s about it. Unless that paper is the balance sheet for your bank account.

even the clean ones are iffy on reliability. a beater? oh boy.

It’s about as reliable as an Audi Allroad. A basic FWD wagon with some snow tires might be a better choice.

My friend has a v70R and while he is worried about the adjustable suspension breaking he hasn’t had any major problems. I think he spent like a grand once on other suspension parts (bushings, struts, I can’t remember) but that’s not unheard for a car over 100k miles. He’s also had the car for like 4 years.

I used to own a 2007 S60 R Manual and had it from 40,000 to 93,000 miles. I currently have an S4 and I miss the R...it had some weird charm to it. However, I wouldn’t recommend it as a winter beater. Mine was as reliable as a Corolla, however the uncared for ones can be nightmares. Haldex AWD is, however, unreliable and delicate. If you find an R where this hasn’t been fixed, expect to pay a decent amount to fix it soon. Haldex isn’t even that good - it’s decent in the snow, but FWD biased. I’d steer more towards a Legacy GT.
