Well that was unexpected! It seems the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq HEV landed a rating of 59 city/57 highway/58 combined mpg. Still haven’t heard anything about the PHEV or Electric versions of the car, but that’s a big accomplishment for Hyundai using an in-house 6-speed DCT! But honestly I think there biggest competition, as always, is coming from the same house.
Kia is projected to have their 2017 Niro Hybrid “Crossover” rate a combined 53 mpg. Not as good but the thing pretty much hits all the popular segments right now with very little direct competition. I honestly think this FWD-only, barely lifted hatchback will be the one everyone talks about.

The Niro also doesn’t look like a Prius which makes it a lot better.

I’m guessing that’s a hybrid but that mileage is insane.

Not sure why, but it seems to me like the Niro fills in the slot where the Rondo used to sit in Kia’s US lineup (remember, the Rondo is still offered up in Canada...lucky fellas), rather than sitting below the Sportage.
Especially with FWD only, which kinda disqualifies it as a crossover, and rather just a tall wagon.
Still, these ratings are great for two vehicles that already look SO MUCH better than the Prius does and are also both likely at least somewhat more enjoyable to drive than one.

The Niro is basically a Prius V or For C-Max Energi, but less derpy looking.

We’ll see if those numbers hold up, I remember their old turbo-4 hp numbers being way overrated. The Niro is a sharp looking car though and Kia has nailed their design language.

At least the Ioniq looks better than the Prius. The old Prius was meh and the new one is atrocious.

So basically they do everything the Prius does, but aren’t spectacularly ugly. I really hope they do well, although the Niro looks about 5 years dated already.

I don’t think they will hold up in the real world.
Auto Express reviewed the UK market Ioniq hybrid against the Gen 4 Prius (which, in Europe, only has a NiMH battery, not the more efficient Li-ion option that everything but the base model Prius gets in the US), and got worse results out of it. (As an aside, those numbers are using imperial gallons, for American gallons, that’s 48.1 mpg out of the Prius, 39.9 out of the Ioniq.)

That’s slightly worse than my parents Fusion hybrid, which is a bigger car.

In a different comparison, Auto Express did drive a Mondeo Hybrid, which is the same thing as a Fusion Hybrid (even to the point that it has a trunk, instead of a liftback like all other non-wagon Mondeos), and got 35.3 miles per US gallon: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/toyota/prius/94783/toyota-prius-vs-vw-golf-gte-vs-ford-mondeo-hybrid
Note that the Prius they reviewed in that comparison was a different trim level, and it looks like it’s got 17" wheels, so it got slightly worse fuel economy (48.0 miles per US gallon).

Yeah, that clears it up a bit. My parents are averaging 42mpg overall so far.
