I suddenly kind of want an early 3 door ‘bubble’ rover 200 - they’ve grown on me, and look quite nice, especially considering how good value for money they are. My only proper experience with them so far was one that was used as a courtesy car at a garage I worked at a couple of years back which was in pretty bad shape - it had these hideous aftermarket alloys that had been kerbed to death, a torn up interior and so much rust that whenever I had to clean it big flakes of the car would fall off. Neither the other people who worked at the garage nor the people who used it seemed to car about it at all, and it sort of painted the cars in a bad light, however, I’ve started to like them, and I’ve briefly thought about getting one.

Prices can’t really get much lower than they are at the moment for them, unless the seller is particularly greedy or you’re looking at a BRM model, even low mileage showroom condition cars are usually less than £1000, with the slightly rougher examples going for not much more than scrap value. I could easily find a way to pay for the car itself, and it’d be pretty good for me; something cheap, normal, and reliable enough for me to use every day, and keep the mini for weekends and fun, so I wasn’t relying on it all the time ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )

However, there’s always a catch - in this case it’s insurance, even for a misery spec 1.1 8v car, insurance for me would be around £2000. Nearly double what a similar policy for my mini would be. If I had that much money at my disposal, it certainly wouldn’t be spent on a nearly 20 year old hatchback from a company that no longer exists.

Any thoughts?

Haha, is it weird that despite liking the Rover version, I’ve got almost no interest in the ZR at all?

I can only imagine what the insurance would be on one of those- lots ended up in ditches comapared to the stereotypical Rover driver.

My quotes for context:

Toyota MR2 Mk3: £916 per year

MG ZR 1.4 : £4350 per year

That said I live in a weird part of London where FWD seems to off limits so this might not be accurate for the rest of the UK on the other hand it’s an MG Z Car, I’m surprised it was that low.

This is very true - it seems like every crash big enough to make the news and road safety video seems to feature a mangled up one of these in a ditch or slammed into a lamppost somewhere...

A friend of mine pays £3,000 a year for a 1.2 206. Hatchbacks are just a no where I live.

That just seems crazy to me. Any idea why?

I have a theory. I live in London where there are a lot of cars which more often than not bump into each other and occasionally a double decker bus. The number one reason why they crash is distractions from passengers especially among males between 17-25.

Plus I get constantly bombarded with safety adverts saying “talk to the driver and you will die”, “talk to your passengers and you will die” etc.

Therefore I reckon according to their statistics, men my age with cars that have more than 2 seats are most likely to crash and as a result sky high premiums.

Good thing I’m an enthusiast and therefore can justify owning a car without a boot because passion or something. Sadly though I’m a uni graduate living in London with a boat load of debt so I can’t afford to buy a toy like a car. Still just one more year and it will be clear...

Hopefully.

Interesting, and probably true too, whenever I mess about looking at what certain cars might cost me, I’m always surprised at how expensive big, boring ‘safe’ cars would be, and how some enthusiast cars with only two useable seats I expect to be astronomically expensive seem pretty affordable in comparison (not cheap enough for me to get one, mind)

They aren’t bad cars. Just not that inspiring.

We had a Rover 25 1.4 Impression S in solid red.

Nothing to write home about the only thing different on the 25 from the much older Rover 200 Series was the air vents I recall and different front end but it was a good solid car that never let us down at all.

I had one of these back in the day, a 220SDi. Nice torquey motor. What’s the insurance like on a diesel?

Nice! I’ve not got much of an idea what insurance would be like for a diesel - generally they aren’t as expensive compared to a similar petrol car, but a 2 litre is probably not going to be too cheap - I’ll have to check at some point
