Why can’t you coast in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in a Trabant?

I think it has to do with oiling, because it’s a two stroke.

You can if you hold the clutch down.

You don’t want to coast in gear because when the throttle is closed, the engine doesn’t get any oil, because it’s a 2-stroke and the oil is mixed with the gasoline. 4th gear in the Trabant has a freewheel feature that lets the engine idle while the car rolls at speed.

But why do you get to coast in 4th then?

Interesting. I assume the fact that I have never heard of this is because everyone else includes the freewheeling in all the gears with their 2 strokes?

Most 2-stroke cars do, SAABs, DKWs, etc. Subaru and Suzuki used an oil pump to supply the bearings, and so a freewheel wasn’t necessary. Most other 2-stroke machines didn’t need one because they were usually operated wide open (small motorcycles, outboard motors and such).

I suppose you mean “why does the freewheel work only in top gear?”

I guess it’s because top gear is the one in which you spend much of your time and in which you’d be most likely to be coasting with the car in gear and no throttle, conditions which two strokes don’t take kindly to as they’re not sufficiently lubricated unless they have oil pumps.

The more upmarket Wartburg had a freewheel which operated in all gears but could be switched in and out as required. Cars using the same basic engine design (Saab, DKW, FSO) had the same feature as far as I know.

Had to in 2 stroke Saabs as well until they got a freewheel system.
