How many of you have lost “friends” over this election? I’ve officially been deleted and blocked over my non-support of Donald Trump. I support him in that he is now my President, but I dislike him and his general platform.
Anyway, I was accused of being a “Hillary supporter” (I’m not - I didn’t like her, either) and told that this former friend of mine just “cannot associate with people like that.” She said that by going against Trump, I silently supported Hillary Clinton.
We started to get into an argument over it and I just finally said “agree to disagree” because it was about to get ugly and I didn’t want that for either of us. She said I focus too much on the “love” message of Jesus Christ (yes, I am a Christian - PLEASE don’t turn this into a religious debate or anti-religion thread) and not on the fact that I need to not overlook the sins of others. Last I checked, it wasn’t my job to condemn others. Thank God.
Sigh. When did someone’s opinion become a reason to stop talking to them?
Have an MR-2 for your time.

I voted their party. I have told people if they have a problem with that to unfriendly me at will and to go pound sand. I don’t have time for people who think the first ammendment only applies when it’s convenient for their agenda.

“I focus too much on the “love” message of Jesus Christ”
She sounds like a real old-testament kinda woman, whereas I feel like Jesus would probably focus on the “love” message as well.

Honestly I un-followed a lot of people this summer because they posted about Trump non stop. Vote for Trump, its your right. But I dont want to see it, everyday, all day, for months. NO ONE does.

Unfriended quite a few. Barely use FB anymore so when I do go on, it’s nice not seeing their trashy political and nonpolitical posts. A lot of them were people I grew up with so I knew they had racist tendencies and the lot. Some people grow out of it, some don’t. Oh well, life goes on!

I have precisely one friend who I’m comfortable talking politics with. We generally agree on most things, but when we have differences we are both very open and respectful to listening to, and discussing each others ideas. I keep all of my thoughts off FB, and apart from maybe a couple of cautiously posted comments here on Oppo, I don’t discuss politics on social media at all. I’m very reluctant to even discuss them in person, even between my family, and my wife. So I haven’t lost any friends over this because I stay out of it, I have my opinion, they have theirs. I’m open to discussion so long as it remains civil, but it’s not something I willfully get in to. I have thought about removing a few FB friends, some on each sides of the political spectrum, not because of who they supported, but because I wasn’t close with them in the first place, their posts and idea’s are either heavily biased, or completely unrealistic, and they posted constantly. I haven’t deleted anybody though because I find it interesting to view, from a distance, the viewpoints of both sides, even if they are the extreme points.

I never bookfaced to begin with, so I didn’t have anyone to lose there.
Oppo is as social-media as I ever get, and I’ve considered de-Oppoing numerous times over the past few days.
(that sentence doesn’t refer to you in any way at all)
Every time I begin crafting a response to a discussion, I end up taking a deep breath and clicking ‘cancel’ after about 3 paragraphs. It’s just not worth my energy, including that which would then get expended in further replies.

Friendships that are ended over elections are not good ones anyway, let her go. It’s harder when family pulls that stunt, but I’ve learned to let them go too. This is one of many reasons I don’t Facebook, because an awful lot of my extended family has completely contrary political and social views, and choose to rant at or stop talking to anyone who doesn’t agree. Fine, that’s their deal, I’m not that way. I had an in -depth 80-message debate with a guy I’ve been good friends with for 25 years on Tuesday night, and guess what? We’ll be friends and continue to drink beer around campfires for the rest of our lives.

Don’t bother with discussing policy on Facebook. I get feeds from Stratfor, Reuters, War on the Rocks et. al. there, but I don’t discuss policy. Cuz’ for every thinkpiece from them you get 3 Global Research papers pulled out of your ass.
Why? Fucking meme bois that is. Yeah, they’re still friends (unsubscribe, subtlety is a virtue), but I wouldn’t mind getting them soused so they don’t remember the slap. Happened long before the election.

I haven’t lost any friends. I’m in Canada, though I have friends in the US.
Some of them are Trump supporters, but that won’t cause me to cut ties with them unless they try to force their views on me... which hasn’t happened.
“She said that by going against Trump, I silently supported Hillary Clinton.”
Sounds like she’s a “If you’re not with us, you’re against us” partisan idiot... which probably means losing her friendship is no great loss.

Trump voters seem to be fishing around to find out which of their friends didn’t vote for him. I was asked, “So you voted for Hillary?”
I replied, “No, I voted against a rapist.”
I don’t have to say who I voted for.

That drove me nuts this whole election. BOTH sides were claiming that a 3rd party vote was “a vote for the other side”. I knew Gary Johnson wasn’t going to win this year, but I was going to do my part in making sure a 3rd party became a viable choice in 4 years. It’s a damn shame we didn’t reach that goal, but I can say I tried.

Haven’t lost or deleted anyone, but I did temporarily unfollow two friends - one is constantly whining about the loss, and the other is trolling all of the liberal blogs and reposting it all on facebook. I won’t delete anyone over their opinion, but I don’t have to watch it cover my screen.
I DID make one friend caps lock screaming angry by reminding him that both candidates are more than likely unsaved (though I could be wrong), and therefore are probably more like a Nebuchadnezzar than David...

None. And I live in one of the most liberal parts of the country right now.
My friends are pretty accepting of my political views. I’ve gone in and out of supporting Trump throughout this election. As of right now, I’m hopeful that he does what’s best. So far, he’s withdrawn a lot of his bigoted statements and his meeting with Obama seemed much more presidential that the Trump of a few weeks ago.

It reminds me of 1950s era “red scare” tactics. Everyone was accusing each other of being a communist and/or a spy. Now, people are or were accusing each other of being “Hillary voters.”

I feel that a lot of the time, people get riled up and aggressive solely for the sake of getting riled up. It makes them feel self righteous and important. People like this do not think rationally, nor can they accept nuance. People like this exist on both sides. I believe that deep down it comes from pride.

Anyone who can’t accept that you might have differing political opinions than them isn’t a friend. If they don’t wish to be friends with you for having a different way of thinking, then good riddance.
I am so tired of the “2 parties, and only 2 parties” mentality. You know what? I’m not a fan of Trump. I think he’s kind of an idiot. But I also equally dislike Hillary. I think she can’t be trusted. So I didn’t vote for either, because I didn’t want either person as my president. I knew the candidate for whom I voted had little chance of winning, but I’m happier casting my vote for someone who most closely aligns to my beliefs.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with thinking for ourselves instead of blindly subscribing to what one party says we should think.

I agree. I think neither the Democratic Party nor the Republican Party have America’s best interests at heart anymore. They have both become too distanced and uninterested in what’s best for the country. They only care about what’s best for them.
I voted Third Party as well, just as I did in 2012. But, I live in such a Republican majority state that my vote doesn’t really influence anything.
ateamfan42

11/11/2016 at 15:21 | 1 |
I know exactly how you feel. My state always goes Democratic, so I know a third party vote is nothing but a non-vote for the 2 big choices.
I really dislike blind party loyalty. The parties have their own agendas, and I can’t really align myself with any one. I care far less what the letter next to a candidate’s name than I do what specific qualities that person has made their political priorities.
