I see a lot of hand-wringing and angst here, much of it happening between “friends.” The world isn’t going end. The U.S. isn’t burning down. The situation has changed, just like it has done almost every four years since this country was founded.

I suggest we all remember that our friendships were built on common ground. It’s time to set aside the polarizing issues and remember why we are friends in the first place.

I hope the country isn’t burning down, but I have two big doubts. First Trump’s economic policies if implemented anywhere near in the way he’s discussed seem to certain to trigger a major financial collapse (likely involving the world abandoning the dollar as the defacto reserve currency). This would be very bad. Two, the GOP has spent much of the past eight years focusing on voter suppression at the state level as well as aggressive gerrymandering in 2010. These efforts have been checked to some extent by the Federal Government (though the Supreme Court’s decision on the Voting Rights Act has hampered that). If they bring that sort of shamelessness to the Federal Government while controlling all three branches, they may well be able to create a system that ensures permanent control (or at least gives them a huge edge going forward). That’s easier said than done, but if successful, would effectively destroy the Republic. 10 years ago I wouldn’t have been worried about that, but today’s GOP (and Trump especially) placing winning over everything else. I wouldn’t expect the Supreme Court to go along, but Trump is likely going to be able to name at least two justices, and could name more, depending on their health, which again means we are dealing with a very unknown quantity there.

This thread was a deliberate and obvious attempt to step away from the politics. You seem to have some difficulty with that. Here, have a cool airplane. You seem to like them and maybe that will help.

You should just lead with airplanes instead of trying to tell other people how to think...

“You should...” vs “I suggest we all...”

Language has meaning. Here, have a kitten.

And that sentiment would be much stronger if you hadn’t previously been causally dismissive of an incredibly major issue with large consequences for many of us. If you want a post about something other than politics go for it, but saying that the results of the election are no big deal when they obviously are, at least to some of us is not the way to encourage mutual respect and friendship.

Again, language has meaning. Take of your hate-tinted glasses and re-read my post. Nothing dismissive. Merely an attempt to bring some civility back to Oppo. I suppose I could bring forth the vitriol and contempt, but what’s the point? What’s done is done. Let’s move on in a friendly, non-partisan manner.

To be clear, I have no hate for you, I simply think your comments have been dismissive and patronizing. If my vision is tinged with anything it is anxiety, and I would hope you would understand that for many people this does indeed have real consequences.

It has consequences for everybody, but that doesn’t mean everyone has to carry their anxieties into every conversation for the next four years. Step back and take a look at what you wrote. This thread was clearly not the place for it.

This reminds me of the year I was a camp counselor. One week, one of the kids in my cabin came from the hood. Seriously. He came from the bad part of Houston where worry about guns and knives was a daily thing (his words, not mine). After he had started multiple fights and the head counselor was thinking about sending him home, I had a heart-to-heart talk with the kid. I had to remind him that he was in the woods, not the hood. Everyone was here to have fun, not fight. This was his big chance to step away from the violence in his daily life and get a taste of what life could be. A taste of what his life could become. The first step was to put away his attitude and stop taking everything the wrong way.

He made it the rest of the week without fighting. I think he even had fun.

So many people during this election remind me of that kid. It’s time for everyone to calm down and see what happens next. Railing against everyone and everything doesn’t help anyone or anything.

Nope, still feel like it was an entirely appropriate response. If you don’t want it uglying up your post, feel free to dismiss it.
