dont break the law, no problem.

I’d be upset if the construction zone was fake, but just giving the police a seat in a construction vehicle is fine by me

Don’t speed.

Good, but only as long as they’re actually doing construction in the area. If they aren’t and it’s just an “awareness” thing with a fake construction area, then it seems a little bullshitty.

never, I repeat, never in an active workzone.

I do speed at times. not dangerously to anyone but my self. I refuse to be responsible for killing someone like that.

That would be called a speed trap, which is illegal.

Better tell the police that. I’m sure they’ll get on that. They’re very good about policing their own.

Starting just a few years ago, work zones in Michigan have been marked with signs warning “speed limit 45 where workers present”. I cannot praise MDOT enough for this, because it makes all the sense in the world.

The whole point of speed limits is supposed to be about safety, and the whole point of extra-low limits in work zones is supposed to be all about worker safety in particular. Allowing drivers to resume normal speed when there are no workers nearby is something that should have happened a long time ago.

I’ve clammored for this forever. Sadly in my areas of travel (PA and NJ), they have no such signs. And cops will sit in or near an inactive work zone purposely for ticket revenue. Seriously, why am I supposed to go 45 in a normal 70 work zone at 2 am when the road is deserted?

Good.

While here at home we’re like “Ehhhhh, lets finally make it illegal to have a phone in your hand! BUT ONLY IN A WORK ZONE. Lololol oh and drunk driving is still a slap on the wrist for the first 3 or 9 offenses. BEERSCONSIN!”

Do not speed in work zones.

However, this isn’t a work zone. Nowhere in any of the footage is there any work being done. This is just a trap. This kind of misleading BS is annoying. Of course, in the story they’re also quick to reference a construction zone fatality from June. An accident where speed was not a factor, just a tractor trailer not paying attention, and driving right into a closed line.

This is typical highway enforcement behavior.

Same thing with “speeding fines doubled when workers present”. It’s nice when the little qualifier at the end so that you’re not as screwed if you’re speeding when there’s no one working.

I’d be okay with it if they’re actually doing roadwork. But most of the time, they aren’t.

It is not just about catching people who break the law, but how you catch them.

The mindset of the officers in this video mirror that of a hunter in a deer stand, not a peace officer protecting the public trust. Traffic encounters are often the only direct exposure most people get to the police, and pulling stunts like this only breeds animosity toward our countries finest.

If you want people to slow down, then place a marked police car in an open area alongside the road. Of course, you make less money that way.

Do we want people to slow down for this one place, or do we want people to slow down around all construction sites? Because putting a cop car in plain sight is a good way to get people to slow down one time, but start hiding cops in construction vehicles and things change. Word of mouth and people being fined will change their behavior around construction vehicles.

I’m not saying it’s moral, but it seems like it could be effective, not just a money grab.

I hate the conflict of interest of cities getting traffic ticket money. I’ve always thought all the tickets and fines should go into a big pot that is equally redistributed back to everyone at the end of the year. That way the violators are still punished, but no one has a reason to purposefully try to fine people and the emphasis can go back to safety instead of revenue.

Getting people to “slow down in general” is an entirely separate issue that has to do with how speed limits are implemented this country. This is about enforcement in areas of special interest (construction, school, work areas, etc.)

I didn’t say “slow down in general”, please reread my comment because I’m not seeing what you’re seeing. I’m talking about enforcement in areas of special interest which is one way we get people to slow down. Or did I miss something?
