You likely remember that last week, national media of all forms shut up about the election for just long enough to bring you news of the murder of two police officers in the area of Des Moines, IA. I go to school in Des Moines, and on my way back to campus I stopped to watch the funeral procession of one of those officers, Sgt. Tony Beminio, leave the church. The show of support was incredible, both from the general community (the entire route was lined with well-wishers) and the law enforcement community ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! attended the funeral).
As this is a car site, I figured you would be interested to see the procession. I know it’s “missing the point”, but holy cow that was more police vehicles than I’ve ever seen before or hope to ever see again in one place. The variety of enforcement vehicles was very interesting. Watch for undercover models like a Chrysler 300 with a gumball light, an old Trailblazer, and a GMC Terrain, among other less conventional vehicles.

As I have said before, I have family in Iowa. Much of them live in Pella, Knoxville, and Oskaloosa (30 mins. to one hour from Des Moines), but some live in Urbandale, close to where the shootings occurred. We called the next day just to find out what the hell happened, and they were shaken. They thought that there was a shooter going all over town for people. Thankfully, and as I’m sure you can assume, everyone (except the two officers) are okay and safe. I hate hearing police officers get shot as much as I hate hearing anyone else get shot. It’s sad but very much a reality.

I actually got a text from my mom asking what was going on before I even got the campus alert.

Police officers are some of the bravest people in our country. I have a lot of respect for them.

I’m not sure what that says about national news media or about campus police...

Let me rephrase that. The alert was sent out as an email. My mom texted me. I SAW the text from my mom before I saw the email about what happened.

Grew up in DSM and still have family there (and in Urbandale, Johnston, WDM, etc.). I’m still shocked that something like this happened there, although with the world the way it is today, I guess I don’t know why I’m shocked. Horrible for the entire community, and obviously even worse for the family, friends, and coworkers of the victims.

I have respect for even the most douchetastic cop. It’s scum like these criminals that make the cops what they are—the cops are just people too.

Yup. The guy that murdered this cop and one other was mad at the police because earlier that evening, cops had thrown him out of a high school football game for waving a confederate flag.

Appropriate post, IMHO. We can take the extended discussion into the Cigar Lounge.

I’m not an author there, and frankly I’m not sure if I want to be.

They have a pretty low authorship bar at Cigar Lounge; they let
me
author there... I had my doubts about it as well. Plenty of thoughtful Oppos there and good conversation and keep Oppo Oppo. PatBateman is the guy to ask.

I’ve been to a similar service myself & I agree, yet I also think shows of force like this are beyond wretched excess. It’s a standing army.
