...it’s awesome. And infuriating.

Positive? Toyota let me drive their big sedan

Negative? I had to make a 500 mile round trip to pick it up, and another 500 mile round trip to return it

Positive? Networking with people in the industry

Negative? (This is the point which precipitated the post) I spend vast amounts of time looking at my phone waiting to get an email back. Everything is only an email or two away from becoming a reality. This is made worse by living in California, in addition to the fact that my sleep schedule is completely screwed by my job. I wake up at 2PM PT, and am up until around 5-6AM. I wake up to emails from the east coast and then when I reply they’ve already left the office. Im back asleep by the time they’re checking in the morning.

Positive? It’s fun!

Negative? Being a full-time student with a full-time job means I don’t really have time to put the effort I want into the stuff I do. This also sucks.

The thing with that is to not consider yourself as a journalist... I like to write about cars and now want to get paid for it, even if it’s not much... Some sort of retribution for what I provide.

I’d cover the places I go to anyway (I would spend a lot less time on it though), even if I were not to get paid for it so... Writing about what I do opens doors that would normally remain close to someone like me, and i wouldn’t drive anywhere near the same amount of cars as I do now.

Yeah thinking about it, I write solely in order to drive shit and access car related places regular Joes have no access to... Oh well, it works out alright so... Cool?

I guess :)

Become a food journalist instead. My wife has been posing as a journalist for a few years. We get free meals and drinks all the time, free entry into festivals and events. Everything is local so you’re all on the same schedule too.

I can’t begin to imagine doing this as a full-time job. I’m honestly fine doing what I’m doing, especially after I finish school.

Lots of people hold automotive journalism up as this glamorous Top Gear-type thing all the time. It’s far from it.

I don’t disagree with a single thing you’ve said

In middle school I wanted to be a travel/food writer. I think I’ll dabble in it when I go on trips now... I spend an inordinate amount of time researching where to eat before giving up and finding wherever it is local people go. It’s always amazing.

Well, it can be, unless you’re stuck reviewing the new Kia Rio and stuff like that. That would be a pain in the ass and I would not do that...

But yeah, getting published is a bit of a pain in the ass, and doing this as a full time job, hired by Jalopnik, petrolicious or anyone else with deadlines and stuff like that would drive me away from writing after a while (pun intended mouahaha), cutting me away from the cool stuff I get access to when other people can’t that make me quite happy nonetheless :)

So I’ll keep spamming Patrick and other editors until they get my stuff up and published.

After a while I’m sure they’ll be quicker to do it haha
