I had a Trailblazer, now have a 4Runner. Other than the typical GM transmission failure, it was fine. The engine is awesome.

GMT800 GMC Yukon (2000-2006)

It has a 4.8l or 5.3l V8, decent trans, and 4x4. good looking and largely repairable and decent aftermarket. I would choose a ‘04-06 5.3L

Perfect size

Good amount of power

Tons of examples on the road with over 200,000 miles

The interior is comfortable if a little plasticy in some areas

Could be optioned pretty nicely or bare bones, whatever you wanted

I personally think they drive pretty nicely but I’ve heard people on both sides of the fence on that

It also doesn’t totally look like a box on wheels, which I like

I’m totally not biased about this... not at all.

That is a very very sharp looking Yukon. Although I might upgrade to the Denali just because the name Denali is cool. Also the 5.3 is a great engine.

Driving a S10 for the past 5 and a half years I am not so sure the ride quality is that good on these. Maybe it was a bit more refined on the Blazer.

That 4.3 is a great little torquey engine. I miss it.

The Blazer, in my limited experience, ride a helluva lot better than the S10s do. That weight over the back makes all the difference.

It just handles like it’s 20 feet tall. It’s a quality vehicle, but it makes my Camry feel like a racecar. My wifes Nissan Pathfinder handles much better

The engine did stand out if got on it. It’s a shame the Atlas didn’t go into anything else. It should have replaced the 4.3, as it was better in every way. It was a fun engine.

Best is very subjective. There are so many to choose from that have good points to support their cause, and they aren’t one-size-fits-all.

- Hummer H1

- Land Rover Defender 90 (probably my favorite)

- Lamborghini LM002

- Ford Bronco (Runner up, but most likely that I’d ever own.)

- Toyota 4Runner (If buying new today)

- Toyota Land Cruiser

176k and still going strong. I bought it in 2004 with 108k on the clock. I have had quite a few things repaired but nothing that wasn’t expected; water pump, timing chain, shocks, breaks, radiator, heater core. But with what I paid for it plus all the repairs I’ve ever done I’ve still spent barely over $21k on it.

- Elegant as hell

- Absolutely cavernous inside

- Not too large to drive in the city

- Reasonable fuel economy

- Dead reliable (200-300k is pretty common)

- Off-roads well

- Comfortable on pavement

- Long road trip-friendly seats

- Surprisingly low step-in height, yet still has ground clearance

2000 to 2001 XJ.

Sport: these last runs made 193hp 230 torques, stuffed into a 3300 pound small SUV. Had 2, got 5 speeding ticks. plus offroad runs where a blast. it small amd could fit most ATV trails and it was capable in Stock form.

Utility: roof rack, cargo space with folding seats. while not huge is still plenty rooms. great for hualing anything any where. can ford streams n shit. oh and reliable as a rock.

Did you forget about the Trailblazer SS? It was the typhoon of the mid 2000's. Under the radar performance beast! Take a AWD or RWD short Trailblazer and shove a LS2 with 4:10 gears and you have a car that lauched harder than a C5 Corvette. My grandpa bought one new in 06 and holy cow what a car.

It has adjustable air suspension? And I think the 4Runner, land cruisers, etc. Still have solid reads. I wouldn’t say it’s a requirement to play the game but if it doesn’t have that there needs to be other clear and convincing evidence that it is a SUV. And I will say you’re making a good argument for the R-class

If we take it as what SUV is the best at being an SUV, and my definition of an SUV would be the functionality of a minivan combined with features of a near-luxury car plus all-weather and some all-terrain capability, the one vehicle that can be all vehicles, then the answer can only be:

XJ is close but not refined enough. The SUV explosion took off as an alternative to the minivan. The XJ tries too hard to be a CJ when it should be trying to be a Caravan. Granted, it’s an awesome vehicle, and I have owned one, but it pales in comparison to ZJ/WJ/WK/WK2. I have owned every generation of Grand Cherokee (1993 Limited 4.0, 1997 Limited 4.0, 1997 TSi 5.2, 2000 Limited 4.7, 2006 Laredo 3.7. 2017 Summit 5.7) and nothing better defines the SUV than the Grand Cherokee.

Take any generation, and properly equipped, you get all the creature comforts of a luxury car, the people and cargo capacity of a minivan or wagon, car-like handling characteristics, power to tow with available V8, and good off-road and bad weather performance.

Sure, a Land Cruiser might be better off road, and a Suburban might haul/tow more, and a ML (or whatever they call them now) might have more luxury, and an X5 M might handle better, but nothing does everything as well as the Jeep.

And if you really insist on good off road, buy the Trailhawk. If you want more luxury, Summit. Better handling, SRT8. More hauling capacity? yes they make that too, but it says Durango on the back.

We have a 2014 Limited 3.6 and it does everything so well. It’s one of my favorite cars. It dresses up nice for a night on the town. It’s decent enough on gas for long trips. I can stuff it with people and gear. It has every convenience / comfort feature you could ever need. If I want to get dirty or tow a boat, it can do that as well. It’s easy to drive, and honestly, that’s something that gets taken for granted these days.
