A manual ‘16+ Tacoma TRD Offroad/ Sport. Or a cheaper/older one.

It’s got manual transmission to keep me from wanting something manual, 4wd, awesome exterior and interior styling and a decent V6.

Plus, as a bonus one of the towns I’m potentially moving to has a Toyota dealer. Which is a big bonus, especially because I’m moving to a rural area.

Good choice! I drove a manual ‘15 before I got my automatic one. Auto worked out better for me. I can get my shift yourself jollies from the Cougar for now.

I can tell you this, though. The Cougar will go before my Tacoma ever will. I really like this truck and think, after 27 or so attempts, I’ve found a keeper.

That’s great to hear! I just need me some manual every once and a while so I don’t feel like I’m missing out haha. Rev hang is a bit of an engine with these apparently though.

What trim do you have?

Within the next year. Once I move, I’ll sort out getting the Jetta squared away.

Sounds like you’ve made a decision. Personally I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t stand the shnoz on those things.

I’d Colorado Z71 CC LB 4x4 Duramax all day.

Yup, think I have. I’m not really feeling a diesel truck anymore, I wouldn’t tow with it nearly enough to feel the need for the extra cost and I’d love to do some offroading and I hear diesel trucks aren’t as good offroad. The Porsche thing still stands, but I’m going through some major changes which will delay the process.

I liked the Duramax Colorado on paper, but it sounds like a TDI Jetta haha.

Yeah, I understand. If I didn’t find my diesel truck so cheap I probably would have gone a different route.

I’ve been dailying it every day until the GSW is sold (it’s parked at 24,925 miles lol) and I start 997 shopping but to be honest it’s a bit of a bear to drive and park on a daily basis. I’m looking forward to not having to do so.

Still, I’ve got so little money in the F-250 and it’s so cheap to insure and register that in the near future I don’t mind if it only driven occasionally when I need it. It’s a handy thing to have.

I bought a 2016 Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed TRD Off-Road and love it! It’s been really great for camping with the long bed. I added a shell to keep my stuff secure. We now sleep in the bed which has proven to be very comfortable with a futon mattress. I plan on adding the roof rack and side steps and then I’ll be done. It’s a really great truck.

Downsides are fuel economy and maneuverability. Frankly, it is annoying to park. It really does not turn very tightly. I just can not get it to pull forward into a space between two cars and have it come out straight. Fortunately, it has a back up camera so backing into spaces is relatively easy. But for all the comfort and utility, I have no problem living with these downsides.

Also, as a note. I have the included navigation. Which works in the middle of the forest when phones don’t. It also has the dirt roads represented and navigated me out of the middle of nowhere in Tahoe. Without it I would have had to turn around. With it, I drove over a mountain, through a creek, down fifty miles of dirt roads, and back to civilization. When it pulled onto the asphalt my girlfriend and I started laughing at how easily it made the transition from adventuremobile, bouncing all over the rocks and dirt, back to Cadillac gliding silently down the road.

Nice truck! That’s a good color.

Manual?

Also, is it fun-ish in the twisties?

Thanks! Honestly, black was my second to last choice, but it was a good price so I went for it. I really love it in Blue or White. Sand/Orange is good too but I’m not sure for me.

It is the six speed automatic. I have a 93 miata for manual fun. I wanted an automatic because having other people be able to drive your truck is immensely helpful. One, I can lend it to family and close friends without actually having to be there to help. Two, on roadtrips other passengers can take over, which is important to me because I take it skiing (4-6 hour drive) and camping (3-5 hour drive) a lot. Three, I like sports that involve shuttling, like hang gliding and mountain biking where it already kind of tough to find someone to drive your truck down the mountain for you.

Fun in the twisties? Hmmm. Yes... No... Sort of. It has a lot of mass and handles surprisingly well for being so heavy and so high off the ground. Plus, I’ve been behind Tacoma’s that are hauling ass on curvy roads. They can really move. Is it fun? Ehhhhhh. It’s not terrible, but whereas I hop into my miata just to go driving through the mountains, I would basically never do that in my Tacoma. This is even with the V6 which, although it is the most powerful motor you can get in the truck, is not a powerful motor.

The Tacoma really shows it’s stuff off road. That’s where it is most fun. On pavement, it is decidedly “not bad” while getting you to your destination to play with your toys. Are you used to trucks? It is better than other trucks. It is not better than cars.

Honestly, mostly I drive it in a very relaxed manner, which leaves it feeling poised, quiet, capable and comfortable.

Same. I never found the Taco to be anything but neutral but the new front end is just terrible.

Nice, nice. The orange and sand colors are my favorite, but black isn’t far behind. Gotta love how the sand color conceals dirt though haha.

I’d want manual for the opposite reason, haha. I couldn’t stand people borrowing my vehicle.

And that’s true on the handling. I’ve seen pickups going super fast on twisty roads, last week I got passed by a 1980-something Chevy truck with a lift kit.

I’m fairly used to trucks, mainly really shitty old ones though.

He is committed to Tacomas ever since.

3rd gen Taco looks excellent if you shell out the dough. Whereas I think the 2nd gen looks good as an honest base model (like mine), the 3rd gen just looks awful as a base model. 4x4 with a longbed (longbed now means 6'...) is the only way to go in any case.

I could finance a used one and get all the options I want, like I’m inclined to get a double cab TRD Off-Road. But new, they’re too damn expensive.

I’ve been in love with how the 3rd gen looks since the Back To The Future one that made its rounds to auto shows.

My dad and I went in on a 2017 DCLB TRD Sport. There is a lot of good advice on Tacoma world about Invoice pricing. We ordered ours and got ours at invoice. We went with the Auto however...

Ah, in that case no worries then. You won’t forget you’re driving a truck, but it handles very nicely.
