I’m no where near a good spot financially.

Damn. I’ve been wanting to do this as a super sleeper type thing myself. But I’m in the same boat. No monies = no new car. That and any money I do have is going in to savings to buy a house. I have been thinking about doing something similar with the Crown Vic though, lol.

I tried getting my sister to buy a S80, but none are for sale locally, so she got a 08 BMW 528i

I just got my Juke in June, and carried over $1600 from my old loan. So far I’ve made 4 payments ($313/month). So I’m still paying off my old car loan in a way.

Is the t6 any better?

IF you do decide to get a V8 S80, there are somethings you need to know that are known to go wrong that will NOT be cheap. These things are not common but not uncommon enough to say, “nah, these cars are solid like a Lexus GS or E-Class” Here are just 4items not including maintenance items. Even then, tires do not last too long on these due to the aggressive geometry and torque. Iridium spark plugs, carbon A/C filters, huge expensive brakes, etc. etc. can tear right through your wallet. A/C compressors, alternators, PCV hoses, valve cover gaskets, EVAP items, body parts are other things that are very expensive on these as well. Again, the following are just 4 big things (off a list of others) that I wouldn’t want to happen to my buddy JQ:

This item control the read diff. I have given out many a price quote and ordered modules or pumps for this. A message will apear tying it to the AOC. Best case, it is just the pump at $350 plus fluid $60 and about 4 hours labor plus diag. At worst and slightly more common, the module would be the thing that failed. The DEM will set you back $2400 plus $65 software, diag, and 4 hours labor.

These are more common that the rear end issue for sure. They will go bad at one point honestly. Volvo says to change them in pairs. The fronts are $740 EACH and $675 EACH for the rear plus any other bushing that may be worn at around 4-6 hours labor and diag.

Here is another thing that happens to these cars not to a point that they are super common but not rare at all. We have done a bunch of this. Basically, the problem here is that the idle pullies tend to fail on these. The effect is that the aluminum piece that hold them breaks clear off the cover. The entire cover (#3) has to be replaced. Parts are around $500 plus around 12 hour labor . Even if the cover isn’t blown up, we recommend replacing the pullies as a precaution if they haven’t been replaced recently. All the parts and labor is around $900.

The last 4 S80 V8s that have rolled in here have all needed transmissions. Before that, high mileage cars for sure at least complained about shifting issues. It would be on my mind personally if I owned one of these dreading failure. Your looking at 18 hours labor , a whole bunch of random gaskets and bolts, $65 software, diag, and $4500 for the part.

Crap. Honestly I had no idea they were that bad and complicated to repair. I heard they weren’t great, but I didn’t realize it was that insane. That definitely changes some things.

I thought the transmission was only bad on early xc90 V8s, not almost all of them. That timing cover is crazy and scary.

I feel like I shouldn’t touch a higher mileage one and if I get one, I need a warranty because apparently it’ll pay for itself.

Thanks for that scary Halloween level nightmare.

None of this could happen to one you get. At the same time, all of this could. It is just luck of the draw along with other things I didn’t mention. You have to be the one to give it that good look over sir. I know you can and I am here to help in any way :]

Is it nice to drive though when it’s all working? I imagine it has a lot of mid range power and is great on the highway

The hardest part right now is finding a decent one for a reasonable price. I’ve realized that the prices and mileages are all over the board. If im lucky, I’ll find a Carmax one and just warranty it there.

I definitely plan on a proper inspection from a Volvo dealer though.

Oh, and I need the black interior because the beige steering wheel is a deal breaker!

we sold one last week with 82K for under $14k (my price $6k)

The thing drove like an absolute champ (since we did a trans on it LOL) and was like brand new inside and out

Fully loaded and hella powerful. Fresh Michelin tires all around

First: this is why I’m trying to work for Volvo (my plan is to either intern at the us HQ or start working at a dealer)

Second: I wanted to keep it under $15k so that’s a good sign

Third: Shame those tires will only last like 12k miles!

I just love the classiness and the timeless styling. And I know these can eat highways up so well.

Thanks again for all your input and advice

yes sir. they are the radness. I’ll be leaving Volvo probably by years end. Going to be future head of Aston/Lotus parts. Those cars are super “meh” but it will be a calmer gig I suppose. I’ll always walk over this way for sure taking breaks to stalk Volvos :]
