In Abilene (Texas) this weekend, I spotted this forlorn Beetle on my way to rehearsal. The area around the Abilene Civic Center is full of derelict businesses and yards full of abandoned cars. There is a fenced-in lot across the street from this Beetle that used to have a few interesting old cars in it, but is now empty. My guess is that whoever cleaned out the yard just dragged this old Beetle across the street and left it outside this closed business.

There’s no way of knowing how long it has been abandoned. The last date on the license plate, barely visible, is 1975, so this Bug has probably been sitting for at least 40 years. Perhaps one of you can put a production year on it. The odometer reads 95,467. Or is that 195,467? Or 295,467? I also wonder what the original color was. The missing headlamp is in the trunk, and the front bumper and license plate are in the front footwell, along with the original jack. So, aside from some obvious cosmetic issues, it seems to be mostly complete. Anybody looking for a cheap project car? I’ll give you the address.

H/T to Vicali for putting year on it

Your guess is as good as mine.

There’s a place I drive past when going to and from school which has 30 or 40 Beetles and buses. They all look to be in pretty good shape too.

My best guess on the year is ‘63 or ‘64. You should submit these photos to the Jalopnik “wallpaper of the weekend” or whatever it’s called. You should also try and claim this Beetle; if you prove it’s abandoned, it’s yours for free.

You should also try and claim this Beetle;

It’s an interesting idea, but I have neither the time nor the means to do anything with it. And I am almost certain it’s abandoned. I’m coming back to Abilene in early December. I imagine it will still be there.

What is this “wallpaper of the weekend” of which you speak? I’ve never heard of it.

This thing:

There’s an email at the bottom of the post to submit. As for the Beetle, you should get it anyway. Letting it sit in your driveway is way better than sitting in the street.

Thanks. That car is 4 years older than I am. Hopefully, I’ll look better when I’m 54.

Fuel gauge, small windows, curved deck lid design and bigger tail lights ..

It’s a shame it wasn’t in a better spot- it’s a bit of a dream beetle for me.

Forty years, many without a roof, in the west Texas sun will do that. Although it doesn’t rain out here that much.

well it is texas, so in 20 years it still will be re-storeable.

That would be a great candidate for restoration. Looks pretty rust free and the ragtop is hard to find.
