What’s a good website for looking up the specs of an engine ( compression, bore & stroke, displacement, horsepower, torque, etc) Olds 455 for your time.

I second Wikipedia. Lots of good info there, and it tends to get corrected whenever there’s a mistake, unlike a lot of the single-source pages online.

whatever you do, don’t look up the ‘73-’76 Cadillac 500 cu. in V8.

How the hell do you get so little horsepower from so much displacement

emissions requirements clamped down hard in the mid ‘70s. catalytic converters came in 1975, and the early ones (pebble bed) were really restrictive. plus, they were only two-way (oxidation) catalysts which only helped clean up unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. so to reduce smog-forming NOx the compression ratios had to drop and much milder camshafts were used.
