As a base 944 owner, I gotta say, I don’t agree. And what he said about the space between shifts just isn’t true.
But I don’t take it personally and still like RCR for what it is.

Yup, that’s pretty much how it goes, people tend to take the flaws somebody else made while designing a vehicle as personal offenses, purely because they decided to spend money on a single unit of said vehicle (out of thousands or millions).
Also, RCR doesn’t shit on everyone, not even on the really shit cars, he just hates on the over-hyped ones and those are frankly the ones that need to be shat on the most.

The car he drove was also pretty jacked up. In the POV drive of it, the owner said the wheels are so big they scrape on big bumps and it had a vacuum leak. I think there were a few other issues as well.

I’m still salty about him calling the E36 “the darling of stance culture” like 3 years ago. It’s just false. Yes it’s a depreciated, luxury sporty coupe or sedan(or hatchback if you’re a weirdo like me) so more than I would like get stanced but there are definitely more typical stance cars. ...right??

Less hyped than an air-cooled 911, but still hyped.

I don’t own one of these and still felt like he was unduly harsh on it. I figure the example he drove, based on the slightly distasteful wheels, might have been chipped or modified in some other way that ended up making it less fun to drive. For example, instead of a massive gap between gears, it probably just fell on its face at low rpm.

Yeah, something is fishy. Healthy cars still Dyno at +150hp at the wheels, and weigh 2850 pounds, the math tells us it shouldn’t be that slow. Even a base 944 with the lesser engine should be quicker than early miatas.

As a 944 owner, it really is pretty damn slow. And there really is a mile between ratios. But anyone who fails to enjoy driving one is no enthusiast that I can understand.

Actually, the wheels alone could be having a pretty major impact on acceleration. That combo has waaay more diameter than OE.

Yeah, I didn’t notice just how huge they are compared to stock until after I posted that, haha. Mr. Regular needs to find a stock 944 to drive.

I think part of RCR’s gig is that intentionally trigger people. Everyone got all butthurt over this video, but all he really did was point out how Porsche (and the 944) are overhyped and dial it up to a ridiculous level.

He owns a Ford Falcon; maybe he’s just a different kind of enthusiast?

Nope. This is Oppo. There is only one kind of enthusiast. And it’s whatever kind I am. All hail the Group Think. Anyone who feels otherwise is a heretic.

I think the extent to which it is slow is overstated, I find once I’m over 3000 RPMs in 2nd, up until I run out of steam in 4th to be pretty quick and fun. Yeah, off the line it’s not great, and 5th in the base model is soooo long I never use it if I’m trying to have fun, but on back roads I’m moving about as quickly as needed to have fun most of the time.
I’m hoping to get a cam for mine sooner or later which seems to really wake these cars up, and maybe an MAF after the cam.

Yes, you see, people hype it as a purist, amazing driver’s car that has perfect balance and an incredible driving experience, in reality it’s just an old 4 cyl car that was considered one of the budget Porsches, it’s now probably the cheapest Porsche you can buy and people, like I said before, tend to justify their purchases in some way, hyping it to be something that’s not really there.

Oversized tires to fit the 20" wheels hurting acceleration? In the photo above I can see space above the tire and between the wheel well.
curious if people have upped tire sizes and diameters and if the change was noticeable.

Not only would it hurt acceleration, it would make the speedometer read incorrectly.

For the record, I dont own a 944 and dont really have an appeal for them. Having said that, I just dont f*cking understand what is so awesome about RCR. Seriously, I have never, ever liked the episodes, or his stupid voice, or his lame way of ‘reviewing’ cars. I dont necessarily need to watch /drive or MotorTrend all the time to fulfill my needs for car reviews, I sure as hell dont need fancy camerawork to enjoy a car review, but his way of ‘reviewing’ cars is, IMO, lame as hell.
To clarify what I mean, I think he tries way too hard to be funny all the time, he uses a lot of (internet) stereotyping during his brabbling and most of it is as old as the internet. I’ve seen a couple of episodes, I’m just not impressed. Also, the 5 minutes of driving 20 mph with a camera on his head, really? Is that a review nowadays? I dont need to see guys pulling drifts for 10 minutes to believe a car is reviewed properly, but I do think a proper ‘review’ consists of a little more than just a 10 min 20mph drive on the local parking lot. F*ck off.
On top of that, some people need to really start not-giving-a-shit about what ‘car-reviewers’ have to say about their car/their favorite car. Not everything some self-proclaimed ‘car guru’ claims needs to be taken to heart. How about forming your own experiences and your own opinions. Jesus.

Everyone’s here trying to defend the honor of the 944, oh it’s not that slow, even the base is reasonably quick, healthy ones still make 150+ hp... and I’m just over here with my 924 thinking, man, wouldn’t that be nice.

I’m with you on the ‘is this actually a proper review” point. I really don’t put much stock in a review from someone who has zero experience with driving competitively, engineering, or any professional experience whatsoever.
I think the premise of his channel is to just make ridiculous jokes and have an excuse to drive a variety of vehicles that interest him.

I think so too, which is one of the reasons I can’t understand why some people hold this guy on a pedestal so much.
