The 2017 Yaris WRC car finally took off it’s camo, and it looks as mad as anything the 80s produced

Knowing Toyota TRD in North America, all that Yaris got was a muffler upgrade to go with the body kit.

Well, there you go. Proof positive that the Yaris has gone beyond being just A Car . It’s now A Fucking Badass

[Question is... would Oggy have stood a chance against Vatanen? Loeb against Rohrl? McRae vs Auriol?]

[It is quite a thought experiment. The best rally drivers today in their cars, versus the best rally drivers of the past in their cars, then driving the other’s car, the in a spec car.]

It looks like it has at least 900hp.

Also, I’m totally wanting to get a Regional or R5 (maybe R3) spec version of that. Totally. Yes, even with the door-mounted side mirrors.

This will be better than Group B.

And goes like it does. In places most drivers would not dare go lest they void the warranty.

I wish this was the Yaris I got to drive everyday. I think I’d hate it less

I love how they added those huge gravel directors behind the wheels, for additional rooster tail action. Because I know for damn sure that’s not for aero.

It’s for aero, pressure built up in wheel arches has to go somewhere if you want decent downforce. See also gaping holes above wheels on Le Mans Prototypes.

All they need is the soundtrack to go with those looks:

Questions answered:

No (though I may be wrong as I personally feel the talent currently in WRC is much lower than what it was in the 2000s)

Maybe, I would like to see it.

McRae’s and Auriol’s careers overlapped in the 90's and 2000's. They were pretty even with each other though McRae’s wins came more densely (25 wins from 93-02) in the 90's, with most of Auriols wins coming in the Delta Integrale and Celica in the early 90s (20 wins from 88-01).

The modern cars will always kick the older cars ass. Group A was close to the pace of Group B within a few years due to the improvement in suspension and chassis design. Modern drivers (such as Latvala) seem to have a ton of fun when they get to drive the older cars.

On a rally car, that is not for aero. The speed is not anything like an LMP, ever, and even if it was, there is about 60% too much open space to relieve the pressure in those wheels wells. The bottom is almost certainly flat, it has a hell of a diffuser so it’s not underbody pressure, it’s not going to be residual pressure from the front wheels arches because of those front vents and the side skirts. No sir, that is not for aero, that is for show. And directing gravel.

(Used to design aerodynamics for high speed vehicles.)

But how would build up snow, say in Sweden or similar, affect flow through the rear?

There is homologation, though it doesn’t require building a very low amount of the race cars for the street. That would kill WRC.

Now we have the tighest competition since the early 00's, and FIVE full time manufacturer teams with three cars next year. Coverage is probably better than ever.

If this doesn’t get better than Group B, nothing will.

Maybe to help cool the rear brakes, by evacuating all that hot air?

Not trying to contradict you in the least – and I know this was aeons ago – but when Williams F1 designed the Metro 6R4 they were quite surprised about the influence of better aerodynamics – even at rallying (i.e. slow) speeds. Hence the front and rear wing etc.

I suppose the WRC cars are in fact faster than (or at least equal to) the old Group B ? If Willliams are to be believed, aerodynamics would play then an even bigger part.

Obviously not in the same way as in an LMP car, true.

You in aerospace, if you don’t mind my asking...?
