I was dead set on buying an E61 in black with a 6-cyl diesel engine come spring. Once I have all my ducks in a row (christmas bonus, not needing winter wheels for a few months...) But I’m just a sucker for these M-bumpers!

Kinja'd!!!

This 525i is soooo tempting! When you buy a BMW why not go for 3 litres of inline 6 naturally aspirated gooooodness?

And doesn’t the sedan look that much better than the wagon? It’s almost as Chris Bangle designed this sedan and then they told him to turn it into a wagon, and he did the best he could.

Oh, and it’s a manual!

the only things an E60 looks better than are E63's and E65's.

maybe the 3rd gen taurus.

you are loosing how much torque and fuel economy?

why not just get M bumpers for the diesel one?

How many kms do you typically drive in a year?

About 20k. The school is only 2.5 kilometres away, so I might get the DPF troubles that 4muddyfeet has. I drive 25 kms to Bergen for my weekend shopping just to get the car properly warmed up, but that’s it. It’s the 2k round trip 5 times a year that I want the car for.

This 530d is also available locally. AND IT’S ANOTHER MANUAL! It’s perfect! It’s also 4k more monies.

20k should be enough for a diesel, but the short trips might be a problem. What kind of difference in purchase price between diesel and gasoline is there in Germany for these cars in similar condition?

I’d create an Excel spreadsheet to calculate the difference in costs (fuel, tax, maybe insurance and depreciation). If the gasoline version is only marginally more expensive a year I’d get the gas version. Because of the DPF issues, the dirtiness of diesels, higher maintenance costs and possible future Umweltzone problems.

The gas engine in those is fairly reliable as far as BMWs go. And if you keep the car for a while, it’s an intake manifold and tune away from being upconverted into a 530i.

It’s just money, it’ll grow back.

If I tell you a de-carb service with injector replacement on the M57 diesels can run to $6,000, does that scare you?

Not bad I guess. The E60 aged quite good imo, while not as good as the A6 it’s still good looking after a decade. A former classmate owns a 520d of that generation and he has been very satisfied with his car so far. The one thing that would worry me a tiny bit is the Verkauf im Kundenauftrag bullshit.
