Driving home yesterday I spotted this amazing UAZ 69 (dude) a couple blocks from my house. It had apparently been imported many years ago and was pretty rough, so it now sports a Chevy Nova engine and sits on a Jeep CJ chassis, but just look at it. I live in a big Armenian community and there are actually several old Commie cars around. I know of a Volga and a Lada Niva that are also in the area. But, I think this is my favorite.

In Soviet Russia you didn’t see UAZ, UAZ saw you.

I didn’t know UAZ made these, I thought they came later and GAZ was the only factory making them.

I can’t that ethem for swapping the engine. I had to wait in traffic behind one this summer and it was painfully slow.

I don’t really know much about Soviet-era cars to be honest but that’s a GAZ as you rightfully said. (I confuse UAZ and GAZ all the time)

UAZ apparently built them after GAZ, from ‘56-’72. The 469 was its replacement.

Good lord it looks good. Even those CJ tail lights. I bet it drives way better than any GAZ 69 ever did as well!
Reminds me of this though.

Yeah, it looks fantastic. That color is right on. The guy did all the work himself, so I talked to him about the Le Car. I might enlist his help with the bodywork. It must drive great. One of the instances where I completely approve of a restomod for daily driving purposes. Those taillights totally work, but they work on most vehicles.
HAHA! Is that from some movie I’ve forgotten about?

The hood badge says UAZ, GAZ would be A.

The color combo with those black wheels is AWESOME! Has that ultimate Operation Desert Storm feel to it. And just LOOK AT THOSE WIPERS!!!!! This is a highly approved restomod as I’m sure the GAZ will drive way more often than it ever did. Curious if he needed to lengthen/shorten that chassis? Your new best friend this is!
I think the picture is from Glee , not sure if that was actually a scene as I’ve rarely seen it. My ex watched that show so I only tagged along once in a while. That is a common joke though.

I posted my pictures to this Eastern Bloc cars Facebook group and a few people there were familiar with it. Apparently it was a former KGB staff car which is pretty interesting. I wonder what kind of staff were using these. It was also a very expensive build according to them. Here’s some photos of it in progress. It doesn’t look like anything was too modified, but regardless, it came out great. I love that color. I guess that’s what it originally looked like.
I imagine it’s supposed to look like this, but the color’s a tad different actually.
I never watched Glee . I’m surprised it was on long enough for you to have watched it with an ex. How long have you and Krista been married?

That color is a bit different, a bit pinkish compared to the Desert Storm beige. Must be an amazing story to it. Not too modified? The entire chassis/floorpan of another car was used! ;-)
We’ve been married for 5 years now. So I’ve seem to have confused stuff. I probably watched it a bit at Krista’s place as we were not living together back then? I do remember the song of the first episode.

It’s heavily modified, yes, but the body doesn’t look like it was lengthened. I kind of like the pinkish color. It seems like something they’d use in the U.S.S.R. Like it either it was meant for something else and they used it on those things; or they meant it to be more beige, but screwed it up and just went with it. Which could be what happened in this case.
It came on in 2009. How long were you two dating before tying the knot? What was the song? People sure loved that show for, like, a minute.

Ah, the body looks plain original indeed. Except for those taillights. And the top. Maybe it would be a great daily driver as a replacement for my Volvo. I’d need to find a solution for those doors with our climate though.
It started in late 2009. That song was Journey’s...
