This Outback XT (with a manual, making it one of under a thousand) has been sitting on the dealer lot since May. Price has gone down a grand since then (now $9,995) and with how long it’s been there they’d probably be willing to make a deal. When I talked to them in May they said they’d already taken care of the infamous engine maintenance points (timing belt, water pump, head gaskets). Someone go get her and let her run free again.

Manuel? I might be interested. Looking for a manual wagon to replace the nox box.

is anyone ever really out? My wife and I hate the SUV that the outback has become, but this gen strikes a nice chord.

05 means it has the cat in the up pipe (which likes to come apart and kill turbos). Also no aux jack and no option for Bluetooth (aside from maybe Bluetooth to cassette adapter).

But $5500. Also I am a bit nostalgic for 2005s. And didn’t you have to mod bluetooth into yours?

Agreed, this was the last generation where the Outback was indisputably a car, and in my opinion one of the best looking vehicles Subaru ever made

Ooooh. I saw a WRB Forester XT while driving on the AZ 87 yesterday. I would have taken a picture but the giant erection made it really hard to fish the phone out of my pocket.

I did, I got an aftermarket Bluetooth unit from Grom. But with the 05-07 models you can’t even do that much, the radio’s software won’t accept it

I wish! I owe about as much as my BRZ is worth and can’t afford an additional car right now. Otherwise this would tick all of my existing boxes.

They should hire a new guy to take care of prep and photos. A little detailing would go a long way with this one.
Especially if you’re going to post close-up shots.

They say they immediately replace them whenever they get a Subaru. Then again they’re used car salesmen, so...

I will agree that it has become much more of an SUV than the older models, but our 2013 is still lower than most crossovers out there - especially the seat position and ingress/egress. The roof is up high, but you still sit pretty low. It’s amazing how much more like a car it feels than my Forester or the Santa Fe that I had before that.

Ironically, the low seating position surrounded by lots of excess car is exactly the reason that she hates it.

And the head units in these can’t be replaced due to the climate controls and molding (there’s probably a way but it would require a ton of work). I was also kind of surprised that a turbocharged Subaru wagon was that cheap in Vermont but apparently that is market value for these up here (KBB says $4400-7200 for “Good” condition).

Exactly, you’re pretty much stuck with the radio as-is. And yeah, between being about 5x as common and the various issues they have that the later models don’t the 05's tend to be a fair bit cheaper. Here’s what KBB says about an 08 with identical mileage

I just find it odd that in Subaru country these are so much cheaper than I would expect. I expected a premium in Vermont.
Subaru likes to mess with the radio format. My Moms 2010 legacy does have a 2-Din mounting for the radio however the faceplate is molded for a trapezoidal space in the dash. You could put an aftermarket unit in but it would look ugly.

Hmm...cool but seems kind of pricey for the mileage. Then again, I just finished rebuilding a 2.5 DOHC so all turbo Subarus scream rod knock at me.

Price is pretty much in the standard range. These cars retain their value like crazy. Plus they were $32,000 when new

An increasing number of dealerships that specialize in Subarus do the work because it’s become such a well known issue that it not being done is either a deal breaker or forces them to drop the price so much that they’re better off spending the time and money at the start.

Interesting. Wish I would have taken a look at one that popped up on Craiglist a while ago...had a misfire problem and they were asking like $3500 or something pretty low.

Ah yes, the infamous cylinder 4 misfire. I went through that. If you’re lucky it’s bad injectors and can be fixed with new injectors and a tune. If you’re unlucky it’s burnt pistons, which needs a rebuild.
If you’re REALLY lucky it’s something simple like plugs or a coil

The Subaru dealership I work for doesn’t

I never said absolutely everyone does it, just that a fair number do. Also it’s far rarer among factory dealerships (where the business relies more upon new car sales and maintenance/repair work to make their profits than they do used cars) than Subaru-centric dealerships that deal in used vehicles only.
