I'm Burned Out on Touchscreens and It's Only 2016!

Having to assert my intentions through coordinated tappings on glass surfaces is exhausting! Everything emits light even when they’re off because nothing is ever truly off anymore. There is always a humming. But my biggest pet peeve is that everything has a clock because it’s the best filler design you can toss on a screen.

What is even more concerning is the fact that I KNOW touchscreen interfaces haven’t come close to their zenith in integration. I talking to the point where a hotel remote controller with buttons will confuse your teens in 2040. I do consider myself to be extremely tolerant, flexible, and openminded. What I’m not, however, is accepting or adaptable. Technology is the thing that tests these traits the most for me.

There is a cold stress people are subjecting themselves to all for the promise that their burdens will be eased. I just feel like they open themselves up for additional burdens instead rather than more time to relax.

Don’t you feel worn out right now? Not like you can’t continue or even take on more. I mean more...do you feel as if you aren’t as “effective” at any task as you could be or once were? As if you can’t charge up to 100%, you can get up to 82% and overboost to 96% when absolutely needed, but performing at 100% (let alone giving 110%) just isn’t in your capacity anymore?

I’ll stop here because I want your own opinions and experiences rather than your assessment of what my opinions and experiences have been. I’m listening...

People use technology for whatever they will. If that means cramming more information (useful or otherwise) into themselves rather than relaxing, so be it says I.

Touchscreens aren’t perfect, but they’re a million times better than they were a decade ago. And they’re flexible in a lot of important ways, and they’re pretty. I think they’ll stay but get better. And if this exhaustion is a thing, hopefully they’ll get better in ways that fix that too.

I don’t know about that. Remote controls move on at a glacial pace (why the hell are they still IR? it’s a shit medium). There will always be buttons in the world, they have their benefits, and even if things like remote controls were replaced by touch screens, it would make them vastly more expensive and you’d need to charge them 100x more often.

I’ve had Blackberrys for several years now and although they have and had touchscreens, they’ve also had track pads and proper keyboards.

I can’t get away with touchscreens for typing on a mobile (the squares on the screen are too small, predictive text is still an a-hole to use at the best of times) and I hate getting fingers prints and then having to remove them from my Lenovo all-in-one computer.

I like tactile things, buttons that press, levers that you manoeuvre.

Already my car has a push button hand brake that engages and disengages itself. I’d hate to loose my manual gearshift or third pedal.

LET ME FEEL LIKE I’M PART OF THE THING FOR GOODNESS SAKES.

I’m not bothered by them, but I think the put a touchscreen in everything approach is going to be an evolutionary dead end. We already carry screens around with us everywhere, so instead of shoving a screen on everything, just have access through an app on smartphone or tablet or whatever (ideally provide some sort of standard API, so I don’t need to rely on some shitty fridgemaker’s app if someone makes something better).

I feel your pain. I still have trouble understanding why something like an oven or a refrigerator or a coffee pot would even need a digital interface. Like, an oven really only needs like, six knobs and maybe two switches. A fridge needs a single knob, and a coffee pot only needs one switch.

And the above is part of the reason I like old cars better...

I have a love hate relationship with tech. Im a bit of a smartphone addict and i have a fair few games consoles. But some days i feel like id be happier if i gave up the phone and started reading more instead of playing games.

I think smartphones are the end all be all of touchscreen use (this includes car infotainment which basically tries to replace your phone while driving.) It’s just a terrible way to control devices. Usually you have to open a few menus to see what all your options are versus having knobs or buttons in plain view. Also reliability, I’ll give that touchscreen 3 months in a household before some kid breaks it.

Also they’re becoming more frustrating. I’ve used one of those touchscreen soda fountains a couple times the last month and holy hell it’s terrible. It takes 5 minutes just to select normal coke. They were cool like 5 years ago because they have crazy flavors of coke, but today they’re just annoying.

I really dislike touch screens is almost all cases. The one in my iPhone is the best one I know of, but other than that I want real buttons. I just don’t like computers in general either, and prefer to surround myself with older tech that breaks a hell of a lot less, and that I can take apart and fix when it does. Good physical buttons and knobs are a godsend, and sadly also dying out
