Not sure if it made a difference but at least I know they’re set now. I’m a fan of the cardboard-deflector method, but when it pops out of the lip on the edge of the head without you realizing it...

The experience can best be described via this picture from the internet.

One of these days in a junkyard I’m going to pick up a stamped valve cover and just cut a slot in it for this sort of thing...

Works great when the cardboard actually stays positioned to direct the oil back into the head as opposed to down the side of it...

Sopped up probably a pint of oil from the floor when I was done. Good thing I topped it off before I started...

Been there! Adjusting while running sucks.

Back in high school I ruined a 350 doing that. I was having a hard time setting them and called a buddy. He brought his dad, a mechanic. But Pop was drunk as F. Wound up running it low on oil and spinning a bearing.

Long story short.. (Too late!) That’s when I learned how to do engine swaps. I only had the car a year at that point.

I’ve only adjusted valves on a OHC engine, but how do you do it with the engine running?

I prefer it to setting it cold; much quicker and it just feels like a much better/consistent setting, but the oil mess is a bummer. I warm it up with the valve covers on, then take off one, adjust that bank, and put it back on, then do the other side to minimize the loss/mess but it’s still a lot of oil loss.

With hydraulic lifters (don’t try it with solid! You’ll ruin everything) you basically, with the engine idling, back off the nut until it distinctly starts to clatter and slap, then snug it until it stops - this is zero lash. From there you set the preload to whatever you feel like that day (I’ve seen suggestions from 1/4 to 1 full turn, I do 1/2).

Cams wear and so do lifters; when I got this car I replaced the disintegrated original cork valve cover gaskets and this is the first I’ve done it, so it’s know to be a very long time since the preload was set. I have full maintenance records with no mention of it, and while it doesn’t mean it was never done, it’s a possibility.

In terms of value gained, it did quiet down a couple valves (though something on #5 is still ticky). I’ve not gone for a drive yet to see if it’s any smoother or anything though.

And the lifters self adjust for wear. If you set them not running you get the same performance and no oil spray

And take 10x as long. I’ll take a lost cup of oil over spending a whole afternoon adjusting valves; running takes about 10-15 minutes once it’s hot. If you were to pull both valve covers at once and do them all in one pass it honestly would take about 5 minutes.
