Brother in law is looking for the most comfortable, reliable pickup he can find with seats for 6. Used, looking to spend 15 to 20k, san Diego area a plus. What’s out there?
They borrow a neighbors 1st gen tundra right now and they love it’s adventure side and it’s reliability but it’s a bit tight for long trips. The idea is that it will be a surf and beach truck that can also handle trips to utah and other similar distance adventure locals with the entire family.
What years, trims and models should they look at? Are 2nd Gen tundra hard to find with the center front seat? Who is known to offer 6 seats more than others to make it easier to find?
Edit: 4x4 required also

Can you get a 2nd gen Tundra with a bench seat? Even the base ones we have at my work have bucket seats.

What about a crew cab first gen Tundra? I’ve ridden in the back of the extended cab for a trip and wouldn’t want to do that again, but if it was a crew cab it would’ve been excellent, they’re great trucks

“They borrow a neighbors 1st gen tundra right now and they love it’s adventure side and it’s reliability but it’s a bit tight for long trips.”
I guess I could have been clearer in saying it’s a 4 door tunrda, but yeah...too narrow.

I’ve never seen it either, but I guess it’s out there

“A bit tight for long trips” is what made me think it was just an extended cab, but that’s fair, they’re pretty narrow compared to other full size trucks

Looks like one guy is not wearing his hard hat. Very bad.

One in six truck models have their hair permanently matted from hat trauma every year

Just antecdotal, but my impression is that the front bench is pretty common in Dodge/RAM and Chevy compared to Ford and Toyota. In that price range I’d probably go with one of the last Dodge-branded Rams, because the coil springs on the rear axle make a nice ride. The others have caught up, but I’m not sure any of their more recent models have depreciated that far.

My brother in law has a full crew cab Silverado. I’m 6'5" and marveled at how much room was in the back seat. It’s like a suburban IMG there.
I’m not sure about the center front seat, but my Sierra has a bitch seat there under a fold down arm rest/console.
These trucks are the GMT900, so you might be able to find one in that price range. I have 85k miles on mine without any maintenance costs except fluids. Very reliable so far.

What does he need to carry in the bed? Because I’m going to say - there is no better time than now to get a supercharged awd mid-engined people carrier and load hauler into your family.

They already have an odyssey, and trust me, I’ve pushed the idea of an Suv or other but he’s insistent that they need to be able to throw their kayaks and surf boards into the back of a truck and not into a trailer or on top of anything

For things like comfort and “fitting” I think cars/trucks are a lot like clothes. You have to go to the store and try them on. He should take his whole family and stuff them into whatever it is he’s looking at before he buys it. Also, maybe check out Turo to see if he can rent whatever it is before he buys one, that way he can stuff everyone in and drive down to the beach to see if it works or not. San Diego should be a popular Turo location I would think.

Trust me...I’ve tried, he’s set on a pickup

Fair enough. Some people have no vision. You could always convince your sister.

The only downside I see is a 25 year old Japanese van being used on a beach next to salt water and the fact that it’s a diesel import. Other than that, it has 4WD w/ manual locking hubs, seats 9, spacious cabin, and I think it comes with the Toyota Cool-Box.

And they aren’t pickups...
They already have a van, but they “need” a pickup with 6 seats now

Ah, my bad!

I’ll say, now I’m shopping for hiace vans

That’s hilarious, because the butt-stub of a crew cab Tundra definitely isn’t going to hold a kayak.

There’s only one real option that can do “everything.” Hope he has money:

I wanna say all Dodge 2500 pickups have seating for 6 because of the front center console doubling as a seat. 07+ Hemi powered ones are cheap but I’m sure MPG is poo. Maybe not a concerning thing depending on how often they use it.

That’s what got me thinking about this, all power wagons have bench front but not all hd trucks from ram do
![]() 10/16/2016 at 16:09 |
|
Oh it’s power wagons only? I want to say our old 98 Ram 1500 had the same 6 seat layout. Can’t remember honestly. Almost all modern trucks that aren’t poverty spec are only 5 seaters though. Limits your choices quickly.

All power wagons, but other rams have then optionally

Biggest cab out there is the Dodge Megacab. Don’t think you can get it on anything less than a 3/4 ton, or at anything less than luxury-level trim, but that’s probably far more truck than you’re looking for at that point.

There’s a 1991 LiteAce 4WD camper van for sale on Bringatrailer, I’m an enabler as well as an addict. I don’t know whether or not I want a Toyota 4x4, or one of their one their 4WD vans. On one hand, I want something to use on technical trails, on the other hand a camper would be really cool.
