I’m inclined to buy something newer this time and these are the options. I’m buying it next week, so I don’t have much time to pick. HALP
A) Passat Variant 2.0 Turbo -2012
B) Audi A4 2.0T (facelift, with the rather wonderful new steering wheel)- 2012
C) Mercedes C180 CGI Advantage- 2012
There are a couple of oddballs too:
-2012 Legacy
-2013 Merc B200 1.6T
-2012 A3 1.4T
-2011 Freelander (I can’t control myself)

PASSAT

The A4 out of those options I would say. The passat is going to be slightly behind in the quality department and the Mercedes has a slightly cheap looking and feeling interior in my opinion.

“Passat Variant” has to be the bluntest name for a car ever.

Weird thing is that I prefer the interior on the Merc, the A4 is the best all-rounder but I hate the central console.

But isn’t it a bit too boring?

It is an efficient name, a Passat, but a different variant.

A bit, stock at least

I was considering R-Line wheels, but that’s about it.

A4 hands down. Spent some time in both a pre and post facelift versions and was simply amazed by the interior feel and materials.

The mercedes is a decent looking design, its just that every one ive been in had premature wear of some kind. The centre console trim particularly seems to work loose and rattle.

Yeesh, I’ll look into that, the Merc is also quite anaemic when compared to the others (156HP)

I say the Audi

Is the Passat a lot worse in the quality department?

I would go with VW Austins

I think the C class is a decent car but it just doesnt quite measure up to the A4, IS and 3 series for me. Ive been in some really high mileage 3 series and a4s recently (company cars) and they were still fairly solid, but the C class we have just dont seem built to last interior wise. Admittedly i dont know a huge amount else about them besides that.

Probably not but I’ve only ever been in a last gen Passat once and it was rather dissappointing, like 1 1/2 steps below the A4. (I was slightly drunk when I rode in the Passat though). It’s probably better in the higher end Passats.

The facelifted ones, like above, have completely different interiors from pre-facelift and are much higher quality.

I would avoid a 204 unless it has a V6 or 4-pot diesel. The M271 isn’t exactly a crown jewel of engineering achievement.

Audi A4.
The Merc does nothing for me, but nor does any Merc frankly.
The Subaru, the same as the Merc (though I do like the Subaru Levorg so it’s not all Subarus I don’t like).
The Audi A3 is nice solid, reliable and fuel efficient and for me the only alternative to the A4.
The VW Passat ‘variant’ isn’t the Passat we know over here in the U.K. and Europe and be all accounts isn’t as good as the Euro model and I’m not keen on ours for that matter.
The Freelandie is okay if that’s what your into.

Are you sure the EU Passat is different? From my knowledge our Passat is (was) imported from Germany

the one in your pic is the euro passat. No variant/wagon with the decontented US version.

Yes. From 2011 the U.S. got the NMS (New Midsize Sedan) and are built in Chattanooga.
The U.S. and China models are built on the old Group B, while the Euro model is on the MQB platform.

A C6! C’mon, you know you want it...

Brazil got the EU I think.

Yes, the Passat we got in Brazil is that one.

S600 ?

Ye, the NMS was a U.S., Canada, Mexico and China model.
I’ve just seen your reply to Klaus, ‘we got in Brazil’.
I apologise. I thought you were in the U.S., my bad.
Ye, everyone other than North America and China got the new essentially.
By all accounts the Euro Passat is a nicer place to be than the North American one.
I had the Skoda Superb Mk2 which was related to the Passat and was a great car. The Skoda matched it in build quality and refinement but the Skoda beat it on practicality and comfort.
If it was anything as good as the Skoda it’ll be worth checking out.
The Passat will be a little roomier than the A4 so it’s down to whether you want comfort and pace or the A4, more compact but more rapid.

The A6 is the obvious choice of these if a wagon isn’t a necessity.
