Ever been in a car that once you get up in the rev range, the notes of the intake, engine, and exhaust are resonating at just the right tone that everything goes fuzzy as if you’re looking at old polaroids and everything comes flooding back and in that moment you are one with everything and whole again? If I could have a car that gave me that feeling, I’d be the happiest man in the world. I think I need an MG B in my life, Lucas electrics and all.

NA Miata bone stock does that to me. Right when you hit the sweet spot of power this odd little buzz comes from the factory exhaust and it’s the most ludicrously charming noise ever.

Them’s good feels, you do need an MGB. I have a soft spot for them ever since I was a kid and an older cousin’s B gave me the same feels.

As much as I love NA Miatas, the noise they make and the sensations they give you aren’t quite the same as an MG B. The Miata always makes you smile. The MG gives you a smile, but also a lump in your throat and slightly watery eyes. It’s so hard to describe but it’s there, and no other car has made me feel quite like that.

I have to get past 5k rpm to get my engine to sound like anything at all, and I hardly hear the exhaust at all. My friends E28 did that for me, I miss that car. Actually, so did his E34. he was good at throwing together hack exhausts and intakes that sounded phenomenal

It makes you happy, but gives you a lump in your throat and slightly watery eyes at the same time. I don’t know why, but the one time I drove a clapped-out rubber bumper one around the block, it made me feel whole in a way. Am I making any sense?

A V6 Accord coupe the same gen as yours passed me the other day, absolutely hauling. The induction was fantastic, you should make yours do that

As much as I love the various older BMWs I’ve been in, none gave me that same lump in my throat as the MG B did. It’s sort-of like the Series II E-type I got to ride in, but a little more sentimental to me.

Absolutely. My cousin’s car was a multicolored primer beater, and I was years too young to drive, but it left an impression.

I’ve never been in an MGB, but I really want one. maybe only because my Dad had one, but I think also because they’re awesome. A guy I see all the time In North Van dailies a mint one in the summer and my god it sounds good. Definitely not stock exhaust or carbs. Sp roarty and evocative, I love it. The only British roadsters I’v been in belonged to a friends dad, a TR3 and an Austin 7 Brooklands Supercharged. I want both.

The freshly restored TR3 in 2013

Kinja'd!!!

The Austin

Kinja'd!!!

The Austin is maybe the best vehicular experience I’ve ever had. a 700cc supercharged I4 with 33hp, 700lbs plus two people, and a 3 speed crashbox. Amazing little car. 100km/h felt like 200.

Me, for scale.

Oh, you’ve driven both an NB and a MGB enough to have definitive opinions about each of them? How Southey compare to and NA? Or an NC? Wait, how do they compare to an Audi TT? What about a Boxster? I’m sure you’ve driven all of those extensively too.

You do realise that it’s okay not to have an opinion about everything right?

I ended up getting rid of my SX-70 and Impulse when I moved. Trust me, I know they’re something special.

Chill, dude. I’ve driven an MG B, and an NA, not an NB. The MG is several degrees worse, yet has more charm about it.

There’s usually a decent one or two up for sale in the Okanagan for cheap.

The 74 isn’t bad, but everything else either requires rust repair or has an odd engine swap. Even then, I’ve seen better examples go privately for less than that 74 is listed for.

Yes, but Drakes is the Western Canada specialist for MG/Triumphs.. and it’s in your backyard..

MGs are a lot like buying a westy, a)cheapest is not always the cheapest, b)they all need rust repair, and c)Having a ‘pro’ look over them before you buy is worth it’s weight in gold.

My friend Chris the MG fanatic likes the guys at Drakes, that’s good enough for me. They bring most of their cars from Cali and hand pick them, if you are serious about having a long term British project they should be your first stop.

These are Chris’s, the GT is fast, the green one has a buick v8.. it’s scary fast.

And since they all need rust repair, why buy a $4.5k Cali car that needs sills and wings when you could buy a $3k Canadian car that needs sills and wings and floors?
