OK guys, it might be happening this time.

You probably saw my post earlier this week:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The 91 Fox Body Mustang with a new 347 Stroker in it is looking like the best option. Just like the Montego it has a few things left to be sorted out in it. Owner says it needs the final coolant fill and final tune. Engine has started and ran since he dropped it in.

Details.

91 Fox Body (actual fox hatchback)

347 Stroker

C4 Trans “with shift kit”, which I’m assuming is now a manually shifted automatic. I’d prefer a real manual for racing but the C4 is a great transmission and great transmissions are really hard to find behind blue ovals.

Holley 650 DP

Need to find out about heads/intake/cam

Roll Cage

Tied Frame

Apparently has 2 fuel systems...and a nitrous set up. Frankly I’d probably remove and sell the nitrous system. This would most likely be used towards tires/wheels.

Kinja'd!!!

What do you think guys? I’m trying to set up a plan to see the cars on Sunday.

Kinja'd!!!

I suspect my biggest issue will be putting the power of a 347 to the ground off road.

What kinda racing will you be using it for? Drag, HPDE, W2W road course? What kind did he use it for? I’m guessing drag given the transmission...

Man, Kinja is kinda screwed today...

But it looks good man. I’d love a sorted Fox for a bang around beater. Cheap parts and easy to work on.

He was building it for drag racing but he apparently has now teamed up with his son and his Mustang.

RallyX is the plan so I’ll probably need to find a way around that big air cleaner for a strut tower brace.

lol, Kinja goes nuts when you use tiny pictures. I wish he had sent bigger images.

The intention is to beat it up around the RallyX courses.

Also, I would obviously prefer switching to a Fuel Injection set up at some point to help with my off-road intentions and keeping more consistent fuel flowing.

That would definitely make an interesting rallyx car. haha

I don’t know why, but I just really don’t like when someone puts a carb’d SBF in any late fox/sn95/ or anything newer than 86.

Overall I like what I see, it looks like a sorted car and in good shape.

Couple of thoughts:

1. Manual trans swap shouldn’t be too hard should you decide to do it. They made a lot of these cars with manuals, they used a Tremec T-5 so there are a ton of options out there with various available gear ratios. In fact, that might work to your advantage in RallyX. You’d have to crunch a few numbers but you could go with a taller final drive (like a 3.08 or 3.23) and a wide ratio box with a low first gear. That way if the surface is particularly loose you could start off in second to aid with traction.

2. I agree with dumping then nitrous kit and putting the money toward wheels/tires and suspension bits.

3. Like the manual trans, a fuel injection conversion shouldn’t be that difficult since these engines came with FI originally. You should be able to snag the parts off any mustang, or Explorer, F150, etc. in a junk yard. You’ll have to do a little tweaking and maybe get some bigger injectors due to the extra cubes (I think they offered a FI 351 so maybe those?) The one hangup here might be cylinder heads - if he’s running aftermarket heads they may have raised ports or something like that which don’t line up with the factory FI intake manifold. Something to ask about.

4. There are options to work around that huge air cleaner. Go to a smaller one with the K&N lid to make up for any extra flow area you’re loosing, or one of the ones that uses 2 remote filters. Or if you convert to FI you should be able to work around it much easier. I’d think you’d want to keep the strut brace to help with front end rigidity, especially if you’re going to beat it in RallyX.

I would prefer it be a fuel injection as well giving the off-road intentions.

You’re god damn right I am

I have no idea how I’m going to get the power of a 347 to the ground off road, but I’m going to send dirt flying all over the place with it, I know that much.

There’s a Fox body of this style in 3rd place in the detroit regional SCCA rallyX standings right now in Modified Rear (which this would obviously fall into)

1.) See if you can get a build list of engine stuff. What pistons, rods, crank, etc. All of that is important. If it’s a cheap offshore rotating assembly you want to know. This is a ‘91 so it’s a roller cam block. That’s good.

C4 Trans “with shift kit”, which I’m assuming is now a manually shifted automatic. I’d prefer a real manual for racing but the C4 is a great transmission and great transmissions are really hard to find behind blue ovals.

2.) Probably not. Generally a shift kit will move shift points and increase shift firmness. It will still be an automatic. A manual valve body will make it a manually shifted auto. I’d rather have a C4 than a T5 in a modified Fox. Find out what converter is in the car.

3.) I’d keep the spray. Fogger or plate system?

4.) Get better pictures of the roll bar. Does it have swing outs? How is it insalled? If it is a garage build you need to make sure it’s done right, not just “in the car”. Plates under mount points, crossbar at shoulder height, harness bar not removable.

Forgot one-

Get the date on the harnesses. See if they are expired. Some SFI gear goes bad after a few years.

A green LX hatchback with a 347 is pretty much my dream Mustang. If you get this and rally it, you will be my hero. Crowmolly raises some good questions. A 347 built by Biff in his backyard with cheap shit parts won’t be worth it.

It always infuriates me that people take these cars and wind up putting carburetors in them. They came with perhaps the easiest fuel injection system ever to modify if you upped the power. I always look at the carb option as a quick out; especially if it’s still powered by an 8.2 deck Windsor block....

The C4 I’ll forgive ‘cause it looks like this was more of a track car.

Need to find out about heads/intake/cam

If they’re stock or even upgrade Ford stuff; walk away. About the only Ford heads I’d wanna see on a 347 are the GT-40x heads. Anything else is gonna choke it.

And keep the spray?! Non Spray 347's can be set up to high 400 even 500 hp.

How in the hell am I supposed to get traction on the dirt with spray too!?

Yeah you just up the injectors and keep on driving! It would work better off road for me too. I’ll swap it all back to Fuel Injection some day if I get it.

You don’t have to use it on the dirt, LOL

Do you ever see yourself taking this to a drag strip? It really sounds like what may be a turn key 11 second car.

Not really interested in the drag strip. The intention is a rally car. The easiest way to make a Rally car is to take someone else’s already planned to be race car and change out the things you need to though haha.

If I found a set of drag radials laying around I don’t know that I would say NO to the drag strip on a Friday or Saturday night.....but it’s not the end goal here.

Off to google fox body mud flaps...
