Apparently I’m getting a Dell.
The Inspiron 15 Gaming (7559) is just too good of a deal to pass up... 15.6" HD IPS display, core i5 6300hq, 16gb RAM, GeForce 960M 4GB, 256GB Samsung m.2 SSD and 1TB WD Black 7200rpm, 4 REAL hours of battery life (6+ by wussy “web browsing” standards), all for just over $850... Its not a cheap laptop, but it is a hell of a lot for what you pay...
My current old ASUS q202 has served me well, but it’s currently suffering HDD failure... Sure, I could replace the drive for $50 and it would be fine, but I’d still have an older i3 with only integrated 3000-series graphics and 4gb max RAM, and what’s the fun in that?

Decent bit of kit if you’re doing anything 3d.

Did they fix the hinge breaking catastrophically issue, or is this one of models not impacted by that design “feature?”

Mostly I just wanted any kind of discrete graphics, but this thing is so close in price to 920m and 940mx 2GB machines that it’s just too tempting...

That’s a really good deal for the power that has. Also, looks like a pretty good size too.

Yup. We’re a Dell shop, and the stuff is solid. If you don’t need portable 3d I think they are still offering some laptops with external GPU capability. Then you get all of the battery when out and all of the gaming performance docked.

Decent deal. My current laptop (gigabyte p35w-v2) maxes out at 16GB (which ironically is what I have) and it’s getting crushed by a lot of the Illustrator/InDesign I do now at work. It feels new when I’m not doing Adobe things but when I looked it up the other day, it’s nearly 2.5 years old and due for replacement on my work’s replacement cycle. I may demote it to travel duty and get a desktop for work - something with 32 or 64GB of RAM.
Computers just don’t change as fast as they used to. The laptop I have has an 870M which is a lot of graphics card. Hell, my desktop at home has a GTX 780 and it still plays most games at relatively high performance levels.
I’m sure you’ll be more than satisfied with that Dell. You may want to upgrade that m.2 drive sooner than later though. 256GB on the OS drive can fill up quick if you’re not careful.

We have about 300 latitude laptops. Never had a hinge break. What series was that?

Inspiron 554_ line was the biggest offender.

cool- those hotter i5 cores that Dell is using in some of their machines are nice. Really good price too.

I’m gonna try to keep everything I can on the 1TB and see how I do...

Cool. I’ve only used the business/enterprise lines. Sucks to have broken hinges.

My thoughts exactly. It’s hard to saturate a modern hot i5, might as well spend the money on better graphics and more RAM rather thAn an i7 that’s gonna sit around twiddling it’s thumbs most of the time.

Laptop-wise, I always go for the thinnest lightest one with the most battery life. So this wouldn’t be for me as I play on my desktop. Looks like a good deal nonetheless.

I have that laptop, though I cheaped out and didn’t get the m2 ssd. Can always add it later. I like it!
The discrete graphics card uses a lot of juice. 4 hours of battery life is not for high graphics... More like 2.

Even if its only 2, thats still double what many laptops with that horsepower manage
and when you’re not using the GeForce, it’s a machine you can actually get useful battery life from, since the rest of it isn’t massively overpowered like so many other gaming laptops .

Not bad. The 960m IIRC is the equivalent of a GTX 750ti which is what I have in my desktop and does a remarkable job of playing modern games at medium settings.

Not a bad machine at all. Super easy access for maintenance and upgrades. I bought the 6700 i7 model with a bare bones 8gb ram and 500gb HDD on sale for $759. Ordered a 256gb m.2 and 16gb of hyperx memory to make on hell of a mobile workstation.

It’s true. Maybe not quite as efficient as a mobile i5, but still pretty nice for less demanding tasks.

Only a 1080p screen? That seems kinda low for such a powerful machine with a large screen. Better for graphics performance, sure, but seems low to me.
Dell makes some pretty decent stuff. At work it seems like I get a shipment of laptops and desktops from them every day. Pretty good deal at $850.
