Could you get keys made for it, and with a bill of sale, would the DMV issue a new title to it? Even if you couldn’t get it titled, it would be the cheapest LeMons car you’d ever find.

The current owner would get it titled at the DMV before they could sell it to you. But they can get the title if there is a bill of sale, or some other form, saying that they bought the car at some point.

For free? Yeah, I would have taken a chance on it. You can run the vin through the NICB database for free to make sure its not stolen.

The “as long as it isn’t stolen” angle is what would eat at me. Even if there were a legitimate reason this vehicle wasn’t title-able, it still has value, in replacement parts. For the person who currently has possession of it to offer it free to me means there’s a reason they just want it gone. Sure, that could be they don’t want the hassle of selling it or parting it out, but even a scrap yard would offer money for it. IDK, for me, there are such things as too good to be true.

I’ve done the no-title no-keys thing with a motorcycle in the past and it went over fine (my ‘bill of sale’ I got was on essentially a napkin as well).

Though I wouldn’t really care to rehab a Plymouth Acclaim.....

Scrap yards generally won’t take it unless it has a title. You can run the VIN to find out if it’s been stolen or not. The “seller” may just not want to do the paperwork to get a title.
