Replaced my rear brake caliper, confirmed that I have the factory upgraded big brakes (YESSSSSSS), and drove the NB for the first time in a week. Holy hell. So taught. So firm. So precise. Gotdamm.
Shiny new parts! Pads were fine so I just greased the slides and slapped it all on the new caliper. I’ll change my pads when I upgrade all of them to a grippier compound.
Bacon on the inside of my wheels. I think it’s brake dust + brake fluid solidified. Super fun to scrape off the wheel.

I believe that “bacon” might be like the paint/finish of your wheel being peeled off from exposure to brake fluid. The factory NB2 bigger brake setup is fun, especially on autocrosses. Sure, it’s more rotational mass due to the larger rotors but I can dare to dive deeper and later in braking zones than Miatas with the standard 1.8 brakes.

Mmm sport brakes. Just remember to keep All good shims. You can only get them with new mazda pads. Granted I have plenty of brake with the standard 1.8 brakes on my 2001. At least that gives me cheaper track pads.

@the bacon photo... teach me your ways lol. I’d love to completely clear the finish (what’s left it it) off my wheels so I can properly paint them and it looks like you found the secret, working its way from the inside out XD

The metal shims that go in the caliper for the brake pads. The sport brake calipers use them but the only way to get a new set is with mazda oem pads. When I sell them I always send with a set of shims. So always keep them around if they are good.
You will learn that track pads on track with dent the shims and cause clunking. This is due to the pad bitting and the little amount of room it slams into the shim. After abuse you get little dents.
Anyways can’t get new ones cheaply for the sport brakes so keep good ones around. The 1.8 brakes are avaliable from napa.
