Does anyone legitimate even use Craigslist anymore?

I posted a wood chipper and a bedroom furniture set on Craigslist for my grandmother. Within an hour, I had FOUR spam text messages in broken English. All going on about shipping and PayPal and certified checks and how they want the item but I need to send a check or something like that.

Seriously? What do these people do with their lives? They could at least come up with a different script that isn’t immediately recognizable.

Sigh. I also posted the items on my local Facebook marketplace, and I received some interest but literally every person has backed out.

My papaw even tried the old school way (a newspaper ad). Of course that didn’t work.

Selling stuff is a huge pain in the ass nowadays.

Have a Toronado for your time.

But what if there really is a Nigerian prince who wants to buy a used wood chipper from across the Atlantic?

that sucks, but it must be a regional thing. I buy and sell stuff on CL all the time and only get a few random spam messages, far fewer than legitimate responses. Granted, a lot of those “legitimate” responses are still lowballers and/or morons.

I use it all the time. I set up a Google Voice number just in case, but I don’t get too much spam. Do you include your number in the ad, or in Craigslist’s reply system? You can also just use an email if you keep on top of it.

I just had a ton of fun trying to sell some wheels on craigslist. Granted, they were a bit rediculous and the tires were crap, so I priced them at $300 to start. I didn’t have many spam texts, but within 24 hours, I had 4 offers for $200 and probably 5 others asking what my lowest price was.

These people. I know the only way to try and get a low price is to ask, but 1/3rd off within hours of posting? And I’m never going to tell you what my lowest price is, you tell me (roughly) the highest you’ll pay first.

And then when I finally relented and agreed to $220, I had 3 people not show up. 3 separate people. I finally sold them to a guy from 2.5 hours away willing to put $50 down on paypal just so I’d hold them for him.

Almost worse is the guy who has had this Fiat 124 posted for months, and keeps having to drop the price because he never responds to people offering to come look at the car...

Know it sounds stupid but instead of using numbers for one of the digits type it out or use O instead of 0. It reduces spam bots at least.

I’m convinced not. I’m trying to sell my Honda PC800, and so far the only responses I’ve gotten have been PayPal scammers like you describe. They even tried to send “payment confirmation” from paypalconfirmation@gmail.com or some ridiculous address like that. (Yes, I played along just long enough to confirm that it was an actual hoax.)

I sold a Honda CR-V and a Honda Shadow ACE 750, bought and sold 2x Suzuki V-Strom 1000. I sold our old 1996 Ford Escort Wagon. Bikes, appliances, furniture, electronics, computers...found two of our dogs on craigslist too... Craigslist is awesome. Complaining about it is like complaining about free popcorn because it has a few un-popped kernels that you have to weed through.

1. Keep deleting the obvious scam emails - at least they are super easy to recognize and emails are easy enough to delete

2. Modify your ad

3. Modify your price

Every merchandise has a buyer. My buddies at work call me a Ferengi, for a reason.

I have found it depends on the item. The most spam I usually get, oddly, is from furniture. Other items, are usually more craigslist flakes than spam.

I completely switched over to ebay for buying and selling stuff. The hassle of shipping things is far better than dealing with cracklist. You can also put “pickup online” on your shit as well.

Accept that selling things takes time and effort. I mean seriously OMG four whole spam messages ? What did that take you? Literally tens of seconds to scan and delete?? If your stuff isn’t selling your price is too high. I know when you bought it all new and fancy off a rack with 5 other models lined up right next to it conveniently from a store with a reputation that was open at the same hours every day that guaranteed it would work and would happily give you a new one if it didn’t it seemed worth that much, but you selling it years later to some guy  it is not worth that much. Not even close. Not even half. Try a quarter on the dollar, if it’s still in really nice condition.

I buy and sell on craigslist all the time. Rarely does it take me more than a couple of weeks. I get great prices both ways. It takes work. It’s free for a reason. Suck it up and make it happen. HUSTLE BABY.

I use it regularly and FWIW I think there may be some back-end something at work at CL lately preventing things as my most recent sale I didn’t get a single spam text wanting to pay me more than my asking price and have their agent come pick up my “quote the title”.

CL is free, therefore you must expect to have your own personal filter ready to remove all the yahoos, illiterates and scams. If you want someone else to filter you have to pay (i.e. Ebay, Autotrader, the newspaper).

Dude. You asssume too much.

I’m asking 1/8 of the original price of the furniture and 1/6 the original price of the chipper. And both have hardly been used, considering they are from my 84-year-old grandmother’s house.

Thank you for validating my decision to get the buyer of my last car to give me less than half the price I paid for almost new wheels and tires (on top of our agreed price) in lieu of taking them off and trying to sell them separately.

Kinja'd!!! DynamicWeight > mazda616

Yeah, furniture is in a category all it’s own with prices. I find it varies more by type of piece than anything else unless you happen to have something very modern or special. So, for instance, a couch is 50-100, a dresser is 20-60, a shelf is 10-30 and so on. Doesn’t really matter what the purchase price was, furniture is tough to sell because if someone is going to shell out anything even resembling real money it’s going to have to match their current decor. So you either have to play the waiting game or sell it cheap. Helps to live somewhere well populated for sure.

The wood chipper I’m more surprised about. Although I don’t know much about them, I would think if it’s in good condition and you have good pictures, it should sell. This is the season people are making firewood and that’s when you use wood chippers right? Admittedly something I don’t know much about. If you link to the ad I’ll take a look.

And I’m not trying to be mean. Just trying to be honest/helpful. Selling shit is cut throat. People are finicky, self obsessed, and entitled when it comes to buying stuff.

No. They do not buy legitimately anymore. You may be able to get a sale if you sell like a high end electronic like a PS4, X1, or Laptop cheap, that’s it anymore. Years ago (2008-2011) it was pretty hot and you could sell things. Nowadays you cannot sell shit, people either low ball you, say they will meet, get mad and trash talk to you if you don’t drop the price, or you just get no replies! I’d rather keep my stuff.

It’s a mess Craigs List. Don’t listen to these people saying people are picky and all that, it’s just a shithole!

You are correct, Craigslist has become a complete and utter wasteland. I buy and sell stuff all the time and have for many years. I sat on stuff for months with little to no hits on Craigslist. I started using Facebook Buy and Sell groups in June 2017 and the majority of my stuff is gone in less than 2 days. In fact, the first thing I sold was a Jeep pet ramp...no hits at $20 on CL for 3 weeks. I put it on Facebook and I got a hit and it was gone in 30 minutes. I still cross post on FB and CL and only one thing in the last two month has sold via CL out of somewhere between 25-30 items! ONE! Craigslist is dead.

I I feel the exact same way about Craigslist. That used to be fantastic but over the last two years I’ve literally sold nothing on Craigslist and have had nothing but 100% spam responses! My girlfriend still believe so I put several things on Craigslist lately and it was a complete waste of time! I’ve had slightly better luck with OfferUp with it’s also full of scams and they’re now also charging for automotive ads. I would never pay anything to sell at $800 car! It’s just not worth it and doesn’t make any sense to keep renewing ad on Craigslist for five bucks a whack when you get nothing but scam offers! I found the easiest way to sell a car is wash it and put some old-school giant for sale signs in it and drive it around. Then people actually see the car see it running and see how shiny it is and start slobbering all over it and immediately buy it!
