!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! this weekend in Asheville, North Carolina. My wife and I are giving a couple of presentations about our trip to southern Africa last year, and we’ll be soaking in the vibe of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
I plan to take plenty of pictures of awesome trucks and do lots of stuff that I hope to report on Oppo and over at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Anything in particular you’d like to see or know about? Let me know and I’ll do my best to track it down.

I passed what looked to be a unimog prepped for overlanding going to Knox sunday night. I’m guessing they were lumbering that way now that I’m aware of this. Wish I could have grabbed a pic

I saw one of those trucks in Moab this weekend. I thought I was about to be thrown into a FEMA camp.

The best, most glorious FEMA camp. A really great FEMA camp.

I need to know if Tim really smells like cookies and gear oil, I don’t believe his lies.

Are all the gals at this Expo “Hippy Chicks” or are they like the ones at the Mudding fests down south? Short shorts and bikini tops?!
Kidding, I want to know your impressions about the community, the new gear you find and see all the photos of the cool rigs.
I’m looking for simplicity yet functional.
Oh, and the gals, I wanna know about that too. :)

What day and time is your talk?

They asked us to do three events:
- Our Africa presentation twice: Friday at 2:00pm, and Saturday at 3:00pm
- Sitting on a roundtable: Sunday at 1:00pm
I think those are all in the “Planning and Logistics” classroom
We’re probably going to the BBQ on Sunday evening. We get into Asheville late on Wed. night, and we’re staying with friends.
When will you be severing limbs with your winch?

Overland Expo West seems to have exploded in size recently, how does the East event compare? I think West was as big as it’s ever been this year, probably the last time I’ll go unless compelled otherwise, but I would like to go to East one time just for the different mentality, scenery, vendors, etc. Good luck in your presentations... or rather, break (brake?) an axle?

Have fun! Is this a show event, or are there trails organised as well?
I suspect you’ll probably meet a handful of people who were at VOR.

I’d really appreciate a report on how many over the top vehicles get pulled out of the mud by Vanagons. I think last year their was only one Land Rover that suffered the fate. Thanks

Nice! Dual showings. What roundtable, I might be able to make that.
There is a slight chance I could catch part of your Friday one. It will depend on how far apart my class is and if I’m told I’m needed somewhere last minute which is just part of how it goes.
No winching this time for me on my official list, but you never know.
Fri:
10AM Tire/Tech essentials
11am I may help with Marshaling class
1pm Tech Advanced Tire repair
3pm Manual Transmission advanced driving
Sat:
8AM Overlanding Survival for Couples
10am Advanced cross-axle locker scenarios
1pm Camel Trophy skill challenge
3pm Tire & Tech essentials
Sun:
10am Regional Roundtable Continental US West
11am Cross-Axle Locker scenarios
2pm Manual Trans adv driving
Most are an hour, but the driving ones are 2

Wow! That is a packed schedule. The roundtable is about “Africa” - so it’s pretty open ended I think.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

If you somehow happen to see either of these two individual vehicles, I’d love to know about them and their stories.

You are going to be a busy boy...
Slightly ironic that the Overland Survival for Couples is on at 8am.
“stop rushing me!”
“but we’re going to be late for the couples survival class!”

I’d love to hear of any overland trips planned around skiing while traveling around and what gear they use to make travel convenient and comfortable. I’m particularly interested in the best way to carry ski gear securely, and what setups puerile have for camping in winter. Please let me know what you find, wish I could go myself. Thanks! Sean

Hey, those are good questions - I’ll keep an eye out for that since skiing is a big part of my life, too.

Thanks, I can do a class a thousand times and it’s still a bit nerve racking.
I expect to see some interesting folks there. I am guessing either spot on top of it or a trainwreck with very few in between. “How do you deal with x?”
Suck it up. All future answers will be the same.

Damn, I’m jealous! Once I get the Allroad settled, it would be awesome to make the trip out for the next one.

The East one is smaller, but not by a lot. We’re shocked at how fast it turned into a big event.
As for west it’s been a similar size the last 4 years (Slightly increasing except for the snow year), but before that it was smaller each previous year right to the beginning when it was about 300 folks in the infield horse track. :-)
West will be at a new location in 17

Trails on site that can be driven by participants during their classes or anyone can sign up to drive a Land Rover on their course.
