A perfect day. No wind. Good salt. Jack the bear for an engine. I want to try the salt some day, but not like that. Not in an A or AA class. Perhaps a 1 liter bike motor in a ‘93 Honda Civic. That oughta start things off right.

I discovered mile races about an hour drive from my house, east of Denver. I’m gonna have to go and see what that’s all about. 1 mile accelerate, half mile stopping. Now I’m watching vids and my over 40 brain thinks it’s possible to do this. Any things possible, yes, but I also think I changed out racing (having never taken a chance) for a livable flying career and missed out on something. This isn’t midlife crisis. This is finally being able to afford to do things.

So I started looking for low Cd cars and the range of engine size classes. did you know the 80s to early 90s Trans Am has a .29 Cd? Crazy! I guess that's how Gayle Banks did 280 in one...

One day, these guys will be breaking the sound barrier. And that’s going to be an insane sonic boom at ground level.

my old roommate (23) his brother (30ish) go out to bonneville every year with their dad and uncle (both probably in their 60's) and all 4 of them race bikes competitively in the top speed races in different divisions. his dad also bought a Camaro last year and started building it to go racing. Never to old to find a new hobby. interestingly similar his dad was a helicopter pilot for a police department and we were roommates while studying aviation management.

I’ve driven a Toyota Yaris down the Bonneville Salt Flats. A) It doesn’t get any lower performance than that, and B) IT WAS A HOOT!

Standing Mile racing is a blast! I’ve been doing it for 5 years. Don’t worry about Cd, horsepower, torque, etc., just take any car you want out to the event and have fun. Believe me, you don’t have enough money to set serious records at this level unless you race an obscure vehicle and engine combo like me (I hold the 1 mile, 1/2 mile, and quarter mile world record for stock block Cadillac XLR).

The real entertainment is the commaradery in the pits after a long day of racing. The Texas V Club usually has 20 cars in attendance at the Texas Mile. We’ll circle our pits together for the event and party all night - grilling, drinking, and having a rowdy time.

I’m not trying to break the coveted 200MPH standing mile barrier... been there done that, cost too much money and wasn’t fun anymore. I’m there to cheer on the others trying for it, drive my car a few runs for the rush and enjoy the company.
