Today in English class (AP Lang) we were given two approaches to the same topic: a teen asking his parents if he can purchase a car. I figured this example was pretty Jalop and relates to many people around my age. Here’s the exact scenario:

Kinja'd!!!

So, in the first paragraph the kid is a bit more logical and is open to three choices under $3K; in the second, he has his heart set on a Chevy. If I had $3K to spend on a car and had to convince my parents that it was a good choice, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

A pristine 1997 850R with 207K miles and boxy good looks...no wagon, but that barely detracts from the package, especially for $2.5K. Parents will like it because it’s a Volvo (= durable) and safe. I like it because Volvo and turbo! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but it seems more beat and at a higher price. Anyways, the question is:

What car would you buy for under $3K as a teen with parental considerations?

Version A would fly better with my parents. I was always told that if I wanted to get something that I have to be able to “sell” it, rather than going “up yours, I want this”.

To answer your question, I don’t really think teens need cars, but I also grew up in a city with decent public transit, had a bike, and had parents that were pretty lenient when it came to letting me borrow the car.

Version A is supposed to fly better with parents...at least, the case is same with mine...anyways, just think that as a teen gearhead you want something that’s yours but is interesting enough and reliable enough to get you to further away places (i.e. a weekend trip of sorts)

That last point is key. That’s how I made it through high school.

I bought an 84 Cutlass Supreme. It was simultaneously the best and worst car I’ve ever experienced. If you want more info, hit up TheVancen. He has it now.

Ask my parents if I can borrow the car. Gotta pay for university, and a car will only detract from those funds.

Version A. Although I don’t think I’d end on ja note of supplication like that. I’d be more like, “that’s my plan; what do you think?” Because part of being treated as an adult is behaving like one. I assume from the text that this is a college student and therefore over 18? Also, good choice with the Volvo.

Lemme tell you something about those goddamn headlight wipers: When the motor dies, it costs something like $1000 to repair. Which is why on my (XC70) them fuckers are disconnected. Not much mud on the roads here in the Bay Area.

This reminds me of the Cadillac my buddy had in high school lol

It’s how he learned to work on cars and if I’m honest, I’d love to drive this in high school

I’m in the same scenario right now. I’m 15, and I have about $2,500 saved up, and I want to put that money towards a car.

I have realized that $2,500 won’t get me something that isn’t completely awful in my area. I want to convince my mother to sell our absolutely terrible 2003 TrailBlazer, which is worth about four grand, and ask her to lend me $1,000 so I can have a better, safer. and overall nicer car. I’m looking at Volvo 240’s and Mercedes W123’s. Sensible cars. Cars all parents love.

I just hope it works

Basically did the thing in the first and found a merc, non running albeit for a 650 and spent another 650 getting in to run, could of spent 150 but I wanted to make the car perfect.

Hah, that’s my kind of mentality...if you’re gonna make it go, make it go well...what sort of Merc?

Don’t worry too much about it. Sensible reasoning and good judgement win out most of the time. Parents are happy to come around (have you talked to the about this yet?) as in my case. At the beginning of the summer I had no idea when I would start driving. By the end of the summer I have 20 hours under my belt and a beautiful 2005 Volvo V50 in the driveway. You just never know what happens.

Version A would probably work better because you would be showing them that you had a plan of how it was supposed to work and not go in all Roadkill style.

No idea; we were just given this and told to identify the author’s “tone”...neither is particularly cohesive, and both feel kind of forced...

Thanks! I guess my Volvo loyalty isn’t such a bad thing after all...

Especially with that venerable I6 underhood. Great and durable engine from what I’ve heard.

What, the Bimmer? I would too but I feel like reliability and parts cost will not be a strong suit on an E39...they are beautiful though...

I would buy pretty much exactly what my first car was.

A red ‘94 Caprice sedan with the 4.3L and 124k miles for $2500.

My first car was a burgundy ‘92 Caprice with the 5.0L. It died - tree at 60mph. I walked away from the crash.

Eh, it’s high school. No other part of life are your cars expected to break down. At least it will be fun while it’s running and your parents will go “BMW is fancy, must be safe/reliable” Your buddy will have an old civic and you’ll catch a ride with him when you have to (which will be more often than not) but you’ll both love the days when you can cruise in that big V8 BMW

Nice. I have a soft spot for 4th gen Caprices since we had one when I was a kid as the ultimate road tripper since my parents thought our 740s were too slow...I love those wheels, I think our caprice had them as well...hopefully you’ll find another great Caprice to own someday!

Hah! So you still have the car then? I have always loved the W201s, and I figured how rare is it that someone makes a casting of your own car? (In your case; for me, it’s just a harbinger of what might come eventually...)

Darn, that sucks. But isn’t it only 50 hours? What car are you driving? Is it the Trailblazer? And I thought you only needed 6 months until you could take your driving test...
