We have the opportunity to pick up this ‘99 Porsche 911 with 92k miles as the RFD project car. Don’t fooled. It’s a 10 footer.

It came from Las Vegas and at some point was either a lease or fleet vehicle (we’re leaning on lease). There are signs of paint-less dent removal and it has been completely repainted at some point. It has a new’ish windshield but the seal job is shoddy and will need to be repaired at some point.

There are scratches all over - all minor - with exception of one blotch behind the driver’s door where it looks like the paint was applied too thin and the clear coat has given it a little bit of yellow appearance though you’d probably never notice unless it was pointed out.

Interior shows it’s age but isn’t terrible. Steering wheel, shift knob and emergency brake handle have aged leather. Unfortunate since those are the touch points. Driver’s seat bolster has a little wear to be expected.

Mechanically, it drives fine. There is definitely an aftermarket pressure plate as the clutch pedal requires a little effort.

The PPI revealed the following:

Bump stops deteriorated

Ignition switch failing

Passenger side seat belt causing airbag light

Pre-cat o2 sensor bad

Leaking IMS or RMS - not sure which

Rear endlink bushings need replaced

Slight vibration in steering wheel at 70+ MPH

So what are your thoughts? What’s this car worth? Seller is hard at $14k.

I wouldnt. simply too much to be done in terms of work, and a leaking engine seal is $$$$$$

I think even at $14k I wouldn’t pay for it with the amount of work that needs to be done - the big issue for me is that there already has been a lot of work done to it that is half-assed.

I personally wouldn't bother unless some sort of sleeper 996 project was what I was looking for and I was ready to dump in a LOT of money. If I were mechanically adept and capable of taking on a project, then I think time and space would be the other main issues.

Leaking IMS and 996? I wouldn’t. The most expensive Porsche you’ll own is the one you bought for cheap. Vibrations at 70mph? Yikes. Everything on a Porsche is expensive. Get one that’s mechanically sound instead.

Not at $14k, no. There are plenty of very solid 996s out there for less than $20k with solid service histories in great shape. At best on this car you come out even with one of those in cost and still have lots of question marks, in my mind.

I think you can do better for that money.

That being said a 996 is white is the best color I think. I’m not sure why, but they look so much better than the silver and other common colors. They are just hard to find. I would pay 16-19k for one with less issues.

996 is the bubble Taurus of 911’s. Do not want.

Gotta agree with the rest of the comments here. There are better P-cars out there for a bit more money. Good luck with the search!
